I'm having a hard time controlling my urge to escape from noises. Foinstance, was walking in the hall way at school to go home (I'm 14 btw) the other day and kids suddenly ran down the hallway with balloons -yelling and screaming as usual-, but they were popping them for fun. It seriously freaked me out so I ran outside to escape it. Sometimes even if I'm in a serious conversation wit someone and some unexpected loud sound happens I run away. I can't be around balloons and most definantly can't stand fireworks; camp fires bother me too.
-I'm just wondering: does anyone have any advice as to how I could control myself from running away? *last note: trying to cope with Aspergers Syndrome |

I HATE balloons popping, it makes me cringe even thinking of it. People never understood why I was 'overreacting'.
I'm afraid I don't have any advice about the running away... my usual result is getting grumpy. |

Fellow balloon hater here. Urrrrr. Wish they were never invented. My advice is maybe to keep something safe and grounding in your hand like a stressball. Also what I do in crowds is count silently to 100. That helps my mind try to wash out the external noise flooding. If that does not work, I try counting by twos or threes.

Sometimes I get to where I can't stand noise or light or sound, or to have anything touch my skin. I get twitchy and start to see and hear things that aren't there.

Is this characteristic? I know the other children were too loud and I would run away when I was in elementary. My son is on the spectrum and I had heard there was a hereditary component.

I've been known to startle easily at loud noises.
Sensory sensitivities like that are inside the ball park for persons with autism spectrum disorders. |

I feel your pain. I'd cover my ears and move away more slowly, but that's me. Probably not a solution for you. I'd have to try not to yell out in pain.
