When I read about autism and aspergers I really do think I'm on the spectrum. As a child I hardly spoke,my anxiety was huge and still is. I've been bullied wherever I've worked, including school. My behaviour was pretty bizarre I cannot cope with lots of people at once,my senses are assaulted all the time, noise makes me feel so ill. I've had two bad marriages where again I was abused. At 46 I feel worn down with it all,I have been diagnosed with fibromyalgia and severe generalised anxiety. I have the most awful panic attacks. Somehow I keep on going. I have one friend who I speak to on the phone. She is pretty sure I am on the spectrum as she has a son with autism. She is the only one that I trust. I've tried having other relationships but they have all endless badly. I really could write a book bout all that has happened to me I really need to get this all out of my system,I would love to know if this is what I've been living with and why ive found life so damn hard.

yes, they can still diagnose you when you are older. it is not a syndrome relegated to children. it would be good to contact a professional who specializes in aspergers/autism to set up an evaluation. it could be helpful to write down all the issues you have that you feel support your suspicions because this would be helpful in the interview. take care.

Definitely, I got my diagnosis at the age of 34. It really changed my life.

I found it very healing. Having an explanation for my social struggles, obsessions, bizarre behavior, and cognitive style allowed me to recover from my misdiagnosis and all my social blunders/difficulties. In the past I was diagnosed with personality disorder which implied so many nasty things that weren't true. It interfered with psychiatric treatment, because it failed to explain my experiences, thoughts and feelings.

Having my quirkiness explained, recognized and accepted by those close to me has been very liberating. I am me.

I was 49 when diagnosed. It helped me out a lot. I read every book I could find about Asperger's and was amazed at how they described my life so accurately. This diagnosis also led to a diagnosis of Sensory Integration disorder. I worked with an Occupational Therapist and learned a lot of ways to deal with things in my environment (sounds, tastes, textures) that used to cause me to get irritated or agitated.

You absolutely can be diagnosed when you are older. I was working with a therapist on my severe depression and anxiety disorder (just a couple of a long list of problems) and one day he says, "You ever hear of Asperger's?",and we just went on from there and a short time later I got the 'official diagnosis' (whatever that means). Wasn't really a surprise though given my history but it did help a lot of things fall into place.
