Hello,
I've been off of this site for awhile because I forgot my log in so I'm just starting to get back into things. I've missed the community so much! To my question, though... Trying to keep this short and to the point. I was diagnosed as Asperger/PDD when I was young and due to the "hype" from a book about childhood bipolar (as a psychologist who has tested me since called it) I was diagnosed to Bipolar instead. Skip to now; I'm 22 years old and have been in therapy/psychiatric help since I was little and seeing the same pdoc since I was about five or six. We just redid testing (not with him but with someone who is at his practice) which essentially ruled out Bipolar and got me the label of Generalized Anxiety Disorder with low emotional maturity and sensory defensiveness. Now, my pdoc agrees that I definitely still have some autistic/asperger tendencies but this psychologist refused to believe I could potentially present in that way. My pdoc, other therapists I've seen, my family, friends, even people who don't know me very well all agree that I present in this way. I go to college and while I do have accommodations I'm very well missing out on some due to not having the correct diagnoses. I've been told often that having a name to what you have isn't that important but for me it is, especially because of school and also to ensure that a therapist will work with me on the things that I need instead of just brushing it off like many unfortunately have. So my real question is this: Based on this background information, how do I possibly bring this up to my psychiatrist again? I've brought it up a few times and it just gets brushed to the side. Even if it's not in this spectrum I know that what I have going on is far from what I've been "labeled" as. Any suggestions and advice would be wonderful. Thank you! |

Have you considered seeing another therapist for evaluation? I guess it would be hard for a therapist to change the diagnosis they originally gave.

Ya, I agree with the above person. Maybe find someone else who specializes in ASD to be evaluated. You can get referred from a family doctor or what not. Hope this helps

Thank you for the suggestion and sorry it took me so long to get back to you. Things have been very busy and I forgot I'd asked a question.
I'll try that. My psychiatrist referred me to someone else to do the psych testing BUT I had been getting over mono at the time of taking it and also think I was still immature enough to try and "beat" the system of the tests by lying. What she ended up landing at wasn't anything near what I deal with so I think it'd be beneficial to check it out. Thank you again! |
