First do not speak English, I am Brazilian and I am using Google translator.

My age is 28 years. A little over a year when my wife suspected autism in our only child, I read of an educational booklet and realized that I had some aspects. Was fun, because if it were like that I would also be autistic.

Confirmed mild autism in my son who is now age 2 years and 8 months, the possibility arose that I also have autism. So I did test on-line in site Brazilian that had the result 29 points when 30 considered suspect. I auditioned here in this site (psychcentral) and I was 35 points, considering as autistic.

I made an online consultation and psychologists already dismissed that I autistic. Being married, have a good job (own a small business) and is adult. They said this means complex social relationships that an autistic do not do.

What do you think?

The psychologists you talked to online are behind the times. Autism is now viewed as a spectrum disorder and I've been reading about some celebrities who have been diagnosed as autistic, despite being married and having successful careers.

I am currently seeking to be evaluated for Aspergers as an adult. Right now my insurance is being cleared by the psychologist's office... Hope to schedule an appointment yet this week ...

The first step would be finding a therapist for a referral or look up a psychologist who will do adult testing. And as Skeezyks said Psych Central is a great place for information

Hello, and welcome to PsychCentral!

You said that specifically psychologists dismissed your suspicion that
you might be autistic. Psychologists are not fully qualified medical
doctors, however; for that I recommend specifically a psychiatrist
(sometimes called a pdoc in our forum's shorthand). Only
psychiatrists are fully qualified physicians, or medical doctors,
who choose to specialize in psychological aspects of medicine.
In addition, I would like you to remember that autism is a spectrum, a range, a continuum of disorders; in other words, persons with autism can
range from relatively helpless to almost fully functional (your post suggests that you come closer to the almost fully functional end of that spectrum).

I only hope this translates well into Brazilian Portuguese....
Thanks for this!

Not meaning to insult anyone, but depending on where they went to school, a person can get a PhD in psychology a lot easier than they can get an MD put after their name. The threshhold to get through medical school tends to be higher than what it takes to get through a lot of PhD programs.

Last week I saw a psychologist that specialized in ASP.
Fortunately I will not need to go through the same cognitive testing I had for dyslexia. To be frank I was not l looking fwd to going through that again as the testing would have been similar.

He, the psychologist wants to continue having a few more conversations with me to determine to what extent I may have ASP. However, he told me had he thought I did not have ASP he would have been interested in perusing this. And Instead would have refereed me elsewhere. So now I am in a holding pattern until results from an MMPI I took before can be obtained. I will make future post about the progress of those conversation.
Thanks for this!

PhDs and only PhDs have the special training to required to perform psychological testing. Having an md doesn't qualify them to perform these tests - a doctor will even testify to that. They therefore do not administer the specialized tests (like a neuropsych exam) required to accurately diagnose Autism Spectrum Disorder. Honestly in my experience only psychiatrists who work with this population directly have any clue about it at all. I've found many to be sadly ignorant of the disorder, especially when seen in adults. I wish you luck with your testing.
Thanks for this!

I hope you'll find some good professionals. My friend was going to some random psychologist in order to get tested for autism and other neurodevelopmental disorders (which is obvious in her case, she's a 30 year old woman, physically and mentally immature, like she stopped developing after 13, but she refuses to check her pituitary gland condition etc, completely dependent on her mother, even things such as going out to a local store are a terrifying journey for her and there is a lot of stuff going on with her in general) and they gave her tests adequate for a 3 or 4 year old children and then said she's fine. It was shocking to me. But I live in a country that's pretty behind with this kind of stuff, so.

Finally starting the testing process this week. it reminds me of the cognitive test I took as a kid for dyslexia... a bit apprehensive about the rest of it.
Thanks for this!

You can see another psychologist to make sure whether or not you're autism. Also, I recommend you a forum that is specialized in autism: autismwebsite.org/forum/ Hope that is useful for you.
