Hi, I have a main topic in the depression sub forum as I in hospital being treated for treatment resistance depression. It has been agreed that I am to receive ECT and I have consented to this.

With that in mind, I’ve a niggling memory that ECT is a controversial treatment for those on the spectrum.

So my question is: do you know of further potential risks that I have not considered?

I've wanted to get it and would. My only concern is the dangers of going under. otherwise I would tomorrow.

That’s a valid risk and I respect your nervousness with that. Through out my life I’ve had quite a number of physical operations needing general anaesthetic and from what I’ve learned, that in itself presents risk of death but it’s rare if you are healthy other all. I’ve been told that the risk is even lower with ECT, which has been reassuring considering the repetitive procedure over a short period of time. I’ll be having my fourth session tomorrow and have not had adverse effects from the anaesthetic. The only strangeness of it is that normally you’d expect something tangible (as you would with a physical operation)... but one sec you’re asleep and then you wake up in another room assuming everything went ok but nothing to see.

Had my 12th and final session yesterday and I think it’s been a positive experience. It hasn’t messed with my cognitive function (which I was a little concerned about, being on the spectrum). Hoping to go home later today (been in hospital since the middle of October), just in time for Christmas.
