Back when I was seeing a therapist, she told me that she thought I was autistic. I've never been diagnosed formally, but my sister has and we are pretty certain my dad is too. I have thought about talking with my psych about it, but I am undecided because a) I don't see what good it would do, and b) I worry it would make me feel even more like damaged goods than I already am. I've researched autism-- because that is what I do, research things when I am trying to solve problems-- and I can definitely see some of the tendencies that are associated with autism in myself. I just am torn on what my next steps should be or if I should even take next steps. As far as I know, it's not like there's a cure for autism. Is it worth opening yet another bag of worms?

There are some resources that are specific for autism.
I know people who were diagnosed a bit later than average (high school or adulthood) and all of them reported to feel a relief. They finally knew. Many things now made sense. Some people like others to know so they understand where they are coming from. One of my coworkers has it. He made somewhat public. It made sense to me and I am more understanding of him now. It does help to know. But then essentially like you said there is no cure so you might as well not know? See if you can find testimonies of people who were diagnosed in adulthood and if they felt there was a benefit to it |

I found it very helpful in understanding myself and why I have certain struggles.
Have you decided what to do?

I’ve been pretty slammed with a lot lately, so I haven’t done anything concrete. However, I am looking for a psychiatrist who is within my insurance network and I plan to bring it up with them, among other things. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

I got diagnosed and even if I knew I had aspergers, I thought I kinda really didn't have it. That I was just a lazy slob. Getting it on paper was worth it.
I wouldn't get a diagnosis if it would hinder you in your career.
