I hope that I'm in the right forum here but I just wanted to post an FYI about antibiotics. I am BP II and out of nowhere I caught pneumonia last month. I was hospitalized for three days and I was placed on the antibiotic, Levaquin. After I beat that I had to remain on the Levaquin for the remainder of the month because of a secondary infection of bronchitis.

Upon taking the Levquin, I became very depressed, it was a lot longer than my usual episodes and I was severely depressed for the entire month. Let me just say it was not a fun month and I wasn't "me." It wasn't until I went to my pdoc last week and I told him about the whole thing and he told me that Levaquin and other antibiotics can really effect your everyday medications. So, now that I am aware I just wanted to pass the information along!

I didn't know ABTs could mess with your mood. I do know that I have to be extremely careful with them because the vast majority of them are incompatible with my Geodon. I had a urinary tract infection about a month ago and told the doctor to check Medscape for drug interactions before prescribing me an ABT. At first she didn't believe me, but when she checked, she apologized and prescribed me one of the few that doesn't mess with Geodon. It's a good thing I'm a nurse who researches this stuff.....the average patient would not know to check drug compatibilities.

I'm so sorry you had to go through such an experience! It's hard to deal with depression as it is but one cause my medication is terrible.

I knew antibiotics mess with things like birth control (making them less effective), but had no idea it did the same to antipsychotic meds too! Thanks for the heads up!

I hope your well now from all your ailments
