Hello dear ones, I've been having tremendous difficulty falling asleep at night. I read, lie down, and remain awake for some hours. My pdoc has prescribed melatonin. We're hoping it works, and hoping to discern whether the problem is caused by insomnia or if it's symptomatic of a manic episode.
Does anyone here have experience with melatonin?

Melitonin helps me some times. I will try it before I use my ambien. If I'm not asleep by 3 am I take melitonin. If I still don't sleep and have a free day I will take the ambien the next day. If not I'll take the melitonin until I have a free day that I can take the ambien. Ambien puts me to sleep for the night then I'm dragging and falling asleep the next day.

Thanks, MM. I have wondered about taking the melatonin during the night if I can't sleep, as opposed to taking it only at bedtime. You said that you sometimes take it during the night. Thanks, because your post is helpful.

I just read something interesting. The serotonin that the body produces during the day turns to melatonin when darkness falls in the evening.

Is prescription melatonin at a higher dose? I'm wondering because I just get mine over the counter. I take 5 mg a night, but I don't think it really does anything. Trazodone has been the best sleep med for me.

Melatonin takes a bit to build up in your system. It does not work like a sleeping pill it just suggest to your brain that it's tired and time to slow down. Yes it's like what your body produces naturally. I take 10mg at bedtime and it does help me stay asleep longer than I would without it. But when I first started it took about 5 days to build up to the point it worked.

i take melatonin with my other meds but I also take chelated magnesium. Its important to use chealted as the other forum is magnesium sterate and its not as good (if at all) for sleep.

No, it's not a higher dose. I took 5mg and that didn't do much. Last night I took 10mg and it was terrific. I feel asleep and stayed asleep for hours. I wish I would have tried melatonin years ago instead of relying on Seroquel for sleep.
