I sometimes hear things that aren't really there. I'll hear a door slam, I'll hear incomplete sentences - a man's voice that I don't know. I hear music that sounds like someones radio is turned way down. Sometimes I hear a news show--same thing--turned way down and I can rarely make out what is being said but I hear all the voice intonations. The pattern is that of the news. Last night I heard something huge snap or clap shut--twice within an hour of each other.

Tonight, to add to the mix, I keep seeing a dark figure standing by me or slightly behind me from the corner of my eye. This has happened recently during the daytime too. Tonight, I also feel like someone is nearby or behind me. It's unsettling.

Is this just part of being bipolar? Or is it not? If not, do you have a clue?

Has anyone else experienced this?

Dear Journey Upward,

you are not alone. I have experienced the sound of a radio when I was in a room without the radio, but no voices or shadows. I tend to think this is part of the bipolar phenomenon but I would discuss with your doctor or therapist for the full reason behind these findings. Good luck and keep us posted as to how you are feeling!

Slick

When my first child was born, I used to hear what I called the "Pantom baby". I would hear a baby crying, but when I went to check on him, he would be sound asleep.

I realize now that it might be the bipolar.

Yep Journey Upward, all of that, and seeing fleeting shadows with no discernible shape, but mostly animals that aren't there. Distinct, clear animals. Occasionally people - saw a 'pile' of homeless people next to a shopping cart the other day when I came out of the shopping centre. It was only a second before I realised that I was wrong and the two or three colourfully dressed old people lying on the ground were actually a low growing patchy green ground cover. I mean we don't ever see anything like that around here for real, so where that came from, I have no idea ...
I have heard and seen things that aren't there all my life, and thought everyone did as part of a vivid imagination. My Pdoc doesn't agree, calls these experiences psychotic and thinks a CT scan is in order.
No thanks.
I guess we just live with the madness and accept it. It's only when the voices make you speak out loud in response in a public place or when the adrenaline pumps and you swerve to avoid a non-existent creature on the road that there is a problem.
Thanks for this!

Count me in. I've posted about the voices here before. Last time was in November, I think, when my meds weren't working.

I didn't sleep for six days after my daughter was born....due to pain drugs and the fact that she was losing weight and had to be fed every hour around the clock.

Yeah, I kept thinking I saw the cat everywhere I went in the house. I would turn to make sure it was her, and I would realize she wasn't there. It was more like if I saw anything in my peripheral vision, I would assume it was Bootsie, more than actually seeing her. I thought I could hear her purr.

Once I slept it went away.
