Between my sons issues and my own I have had many therapist and counselors. Weve had some individual, group, in home, in hospital you name it. Most were eager to offer advice, education, ideas and opinions on issues weve been facing. Ive just got my sons into a new therapist. Weve been going about five months. This guy doesnt have much of an opinion of anything.hmmmmm. I tend to expect a therapist to be interactive and always working on goals and communications within the family. I go every visit and share any major things that happened since last appt and any concerns I have and this dude never addresses them. The kids like him but I just dont see us working toward any goals. Am I expecting too much? Does he just have different ideas of what therapy is? Are there different types of therapist out there? Anybody have any suggestions? I am definately gonna confront him at the next appt. I did at the last appt and didnt get any different result but Ill try one more time. Again if any body has any thoughts i would sure welcome them.

Therapists can have many different theories they go by. Some of them just go with the flow allowing therapy to just happen ... which sounds like the one you have for your sons. No, it is not out of place to ask the therapist to set and work toward goals. Some therapist use cognitive behavioral therapy to learn how to think about what you do while others use family-centered therapy. There are more theories out there than you might think. Does your therapist specialize in children? Does he see your sons separately, both from you and each other? Does he just see your role as being an informant rather than a partner in the therapy process?
Thanks for this!

My Therapist (terrified me!) interacted with me - he listened to my feelings, my issues, my problems and used a helpful technic at first, but he didn't understand how ban my issues and fears were (are) and then started to threaten stronger technics that terrified me! I complained to my family doctor whom I was also see, he talked to my therapist and then he backed off and finally recommendeda psych as he realiezed my issues were beyond his capibility to help me any further.

A therapist should do more than just listen - he should be offering information, technics to help your situations. I don't think asking him why he isn't more forthcoming with information or help is out of line. My opinion only... He is being paid to help not just listen. My first psych was that way - she just listened and pushed pills at me. I finally left her and found a wonder psych who is/has helped me tremendously.
Keep us posted on what happens... Wishing you all the best.

Short and sweet:
To help me get from here to there with goals, medication and talk therapy.
