Hi everybody,

I think I have posted here before about losing weight, but I canīt remember the replies.

I am huge now, thanks to bipolar meds, and I am desperate to get it off.
I donīt want my pdoc thinking I am "drug seeking, or worrying about drug dependance."

I even asked him about giving me ritalin, and he said he couldnīt, that that was malpractise! Maybe he will when I tell him I am OCD, and obessed about things, and canīt shrug it off, as "normal" people can.

Is there anybody know how to get the pdoc to prescribe it or other meds
to help with wt loss? And do you know of a specific meds for bipolar that cause wt loss?

I have been researching all of this, and maybe modofinal would work?

HELP!!!

Thanks,
nirmal

I don't know if being bipolar you can take this, but my sister in law gets a strong diet pill called phetermine(?) and she dropped so much wait so fast. But it can be a major stimulant so I guess it might put you right into mania which seems to be the biggest concern w/ docs about such meds.I pushed my doc for adderall b/c of sleep, focus, and weight gain issues. I have been taking a low dose for alittle over a week now and it will help the weight I can already see a huge difference in the over eatting issue. and It (so far) as not made me feel the least bit manic.

Hi Mama Jenof,

Thanks for your reply. Yes, I have heard of phetermine, but I live in Germany, and itīs tough to get meds from the port. I canīt order by the net, so I am in a pickle.

You are so lucky! I wish my pdoc would do the same! Iīll tell him the same(which is true) problems. You know, most pdocs donīt take the weight gain seriously, when it could Cause a mood change! I am not afraid of mania either and I have been on Effexor for the last 6mo and no mania.

Well it may just need to be a simple adjustment in your current meds. I was on Depakote before, but since I have put on weight since being on it, the doc was afraid of me putting on more weight. Instead, he switched me over to lamictal. Not sure what meds your on, but talking about the meds and side effects with your doc may help get them switched to other options that might not be prone to cause weight issues.
Thanks for this!

Hi Nirmal,
I balooned up from bipolar meds. I then couldn't take it anymore, so I went off Lithium and swithched to Topamax. I lost alot of weight, I even took it to an extreme for a while. Doc told me at one point to stop it because I was becoming anorexic. I think that was on my own devise, though, not the pills. And it is a great mood stabilizer for me.
Some people don't like Topamax, for it can leave you at a loss for words and other things. You get over it though. I deal with the forgetrfulness as long as I can be thin.
I don't think Ritilin is a good idea, as you know it probably isn't the best choice for you. I asked my pdoc for Adderall the other day. I wanted alot of energy to do things. She told me no. I knew she would. It would be a bad idea and I know I'd become addicted to them and abuse them.
With Topamax, I lost 90 pounds. I now gained some back . I was too thin at one point.
Thanks for this!

Topamax was a fantastic medicine for me as well. It helped cut my migraines down by about 75% and weight wise, I lost over 80 pounds. I was only taking 125 mgs, ay more than that and I would slip right into horrendous depression. My doctor said it best "No one should have to die because of a headache." I also lost a lot of weight when I started taking Cymbalta. Not everyone responds to both of these drugs, but one of my best friends lives in Germany, so I know they're available there as well.

BTW, you're NOT drug seeking or drug dependent simply because you're asking about certain medications. I recommend heavily researching them first before asking your doctor about them.

I am on Lamictal and Geodon and I have lost 40 pounds. I did add excercise to my life plan and it has worked great at helping me keep the weight off and it makes my mood better. Keep at it until you find the right meds. Take care!
Thanks for this!

What is the dosage of geodon? I wonder if I could take both geodon and topomax. One is antipsycotic and the other is a mood stabilizer. I am already taking those, so maybe we can shift around with the meds!

Thank you all so much!

I take 60mg now, but I used to take 120. Let me warn you ahead of time that Geodon makes you very groggy at first. After a month it gets better.
