One of the shows that will be on: Bipolar Mysteries: Families in Crisis
Premieres Thursday, May 6 @ 9 p.m.
In this hour, we follow four families raising children diagnosed with Bipolar Disorder - a single mother whose 7--year-old son, Chase, has been hospitalized six times for a total of over 150 days; a grandmother raising four kids diagnosed with Bipolar Disorder, a little girl, Samantha, who was diagnosed at age 3, and Kelsey, a courageous pre-teen who heroically manages her moods, even as she faces the intensifying social pressures in school.

Last I checked the whole diagnosing children with bipolar thing was still a little controversial. I'm not sure how I feel about it. If everyone who knew my brother and I when we were children was asked to guess which of us would be bipolar I'm pretty sure everyone would have immediately answered wrong.

My brothers emotions were always on the surface. He was jumping up and down excited, quiet for hours or having a severe red-faced, point-of-no-return, total melt-down. As an adult he is so normal it's boring.

They thought one of my cousins was bipolar when he was little because he threw such extreme tantrums. Now he is pretty much the most typical, average 13-year-old boy I've ever seen. As far as I can tell his main "moods" are annoyed, electronic social networking and boobs.

Sorry if that went off on a tangent. I'm curious about other people's thoughts on the idea.
Thanks for this!

Just from my experience my Pdoc. and T suspected it for a few years but they waited until I was over 18 to diagnosis me with it because they said it could have been hormones raging or something like that. I don't remember

Oh, I hope that show is put on the internet, I don't have cable right now. Something was severely wrong with me as a kid, and now dxed with schiza bipolar. I would like to see how those kids were like.

I used to babysit for an 8 year old boy who was diagnosed bipolar...and he definitely was. The difference in children is that the mania is usually shown as extreme anger, but the depression is just as bad. I have no doubt at all that he has bipolar. For me, if I had seen a pdoc when I was in grade school, I probably would have been diagnosed with clinical depression; that showed up by the time I was in 3rd grade. I wanted to commit sui but didn't know how to go about it. The hypomania showed up around 9th grade. I was diagnosed at age 17; that was the first time I ever saw a psychiatrist.

The reason I wasn't diagnosed until twenty-two was because they gave me a psych test at sixteen suspecting bipolar (family history plus I was depressed) and told me I wasn't BPD. I probably would have figured it out sooner if they hadn't taken it off the radar screen.

I dont know if you saw they are replaying this on Saturday at 8pm...I'm actually ordering the channel just so I can watch it. I have an undiagnosed son, 8, my girlfriend said she just sat in awe as she watched becaused it was 'him'. It was 'me' taking care of him and our struggle so many days. He's had a lot of diagnosis, BP isn't mentioned by the Psych community at this age because it can't be proven and they still have so much time to change. What ever 'it' is he has, it is exhausting, scary, and my friend said this documentary was a must see. I'd find a friend that gets the channel...
