I stopped the Abilify on my own and got chewed out at my appointment today. He basically told me that when I'm finished with my master's degree and move away, I can do whatever I want with my meds, but for now I should do what he tells me to. So now I have a new Rx of the Abilify to go fill.

He also increased my Wellbutrin. *sigh*

I think this mild depression just has me really grumpy about taking meds in general or something. I'm frustrated.

yes you should be careful stopping your meds on your own if anytihng if your not happy with the way you are feeling then you can tell your doc and you have every right to go off whatever med. I cant tell you how many times i go and see my doc and i either decrese or increase or add and its me. I am currently on, serquol, lamtical, abliify, which i think that i am going to go off becaue i am too jittery and i think that is what its from, ambien for sleep which does not help much at all

I take lithium, lamictal, rispirdal, klonipin, cymbalta for my bipolar. I take I think it is Norvac for my blood pressure, ditropan for my bladder and my regular doc put me on Zonegran to try to help me lose weight. Oh, I take Fosamax, too. Like Mick Jagger said in "Mother's Little Helper" "What a drag it is getting old."

Lamictal
Sonata
Depakote
Lexapro
Clonazepam (sp?)
Dang, it's a lot when I write it out. This list doesn't even include blood pressure meds, hiatal hernia meds, etc.

Hey Schwandy......that's me except with Abilify instead of Lithium. I was taking Lithium but my side effects were intolerable, so we increased my Lamictal to 200mg and put in 2mg of Abilify, now reduced to 1. That may be going soon, as I have some uncontrollable hand and tongue movements. I'm thinking it might be the small amount of Abilify.....will see what my psych says this week.

I've noticed that there are several posters here who also take thyroid medication. I've read where thyroid (hyper or hypo) are usually linked to mental illness. Does anyone know why?

My 19 yo daughter was diagnosed with hypothyroidism after she attempted suicide and I had her committed. All her life she was overweight and they kept checking her for diabetes, but never thyroid testing. Turns out that thyroid issues are very common on her dad's side of the family.

Can anyone tell me their experiences with mental illness/weight issues/thyroid issues? Thanks so much

Hi Karen... Well I've got bipolar (II) and am thin (like size 2 or 4, 115-120, and 47, so no spring chicken). I've been a bit heavier at other times (highest was at first major depression (at 20, hit 140, interestingly enough only 10 lbs short of my full term pregnancy weight 9 years later, but with the depression I was living on chocolate covered donuts, so... ). It may play into it that when I'm depressed, I can hardly be arsed to eat. When I'm hypomanic I don't take the time... too busy with projects. Never had any thyroid issues.
Have read that some thyroid issues can _mimic_ depression symptoms though, but not that they are linked.

Well, I'm glad to know that I'm not the only one who is taking a bunch of medications. In fact, I'm surprised how many of us are on so many medications.

I'm still undecided about what I'm going to do, but I'm leaning toward just doing what the doc tells me for the next seven months, then finding someone new when I'm done with school. I really shouldn't do anything that might increase my risk of destabilizing before I graduate.

Sometimes I really hate taking pills though. It's my ball and chain that keeps me sane. At least, I hope they're keeping me sane. I'd hate to think that I'm taking them for nothing.

Karen,

Many people that are Bipolar have thyroid issues and I am one of them. I would have a doctor check your daughters t3 and t4 cells; a full work up of her tyroid. My thyroid was so overactive that it had to be radiated. I now take synthroid and have for years, along with topamax and effexor. I have been through every drug combo imaginable, and this works best for me.

Wow I can't believe how many medications everyone is on.
I only take Lithium

I won't take anything else. I don't want to mask myself.

Hi, Isabella:

Her blood work was done...she has hypothyroidism and is on a medication that starts with "L". I can't recall the name of it, but it's one of the more popular ones. Unfortunately she won't even take that.

She is also supposed to be on Abilify, and get her thyroid checked every few months so the dosage can be adjusted if necessary. But, she lost her insurance, won't take any meds, won't even accept she has these issues, so I can't help her. I put her out of my home almost 2 weeks ago now because her behavior consisted of stealing, and that I will not tolerate.

thanks for the info though...

I think the high amount of meds in our medicine "cocktails" is pretty typical. I take: Lamictal, Lithium Carbonate, Wellbutrin SR, Zoloft, Abilify, Seroquel XR, and Remeron so that's seven psych meds, and one other non-psych med, Aciphex for my IBS.

I don't take as many meds as most people, though I do feel as though I've tried about everything. I take 300mg of Welbutrin XL, 600mg of Trileptal, and 100mg of Trazodone. I was taking something a very high dosage of zeprexa and Trileptal and I thought I didn't need it anymore. I stopped taking it without my doctors consent and ended up in the hospital plus got kicked out of school because I was a liability. The funny thing is, when I was in the hospital they had me on seven meds; five more than I was on originally. I think if you want to stop that med or think it's causing you to gain weight you should ask your doctor first. Maybe they can find something else that would work better for you.

Right now I'm just on cymbalta cause that's what the PDoc at the hospital put me on, but I'm pretty sure my regular P-Doc will give me a mood stablizer to go with it.

I currently take 30 mg abilify, 300mg lamictal, ativan to take the edge off so I can sleep and ritalin to get me going in the morning! After all these I still have my ups and downs, wondering if anything needs to be added or adjusted.

I take 900 mg of Lithium before bed, and I have propranolol to help with the tremor Lithium gives me. If I stay hydrated the tremor is very small but I take blood from and put IV catheters in 1 pound babies for a living so I need zero tremor.

Effexor, Seroquel, Lamictal, and Ativan for anxiety. Doesn't seem to be working. The ativan helps but it just takes the edge off.
