I have been taking generic benadryl. I had no idea one of the possible side effects is extreme agitation. I have been in very bad shape due to this, almost to the point of non functioning because I was so manic. Please be very careful if you use something. I've learned the hard way to read all the info before I take even over the counter meds.

Well everyone is not the same...I use benadryl as a sleep aid per my pdoc's instructions. It seems to help.

Benadryl makes me suicidal for about a week every time I take it. I no longer touch the stuff at all. I have read several studies (and quite a few articles and anecdotal experiences) that have said that this particular medication can cause permanent brain changes in non-depressed people that make them depressed for their entire lifetimes...for bipolar people especially it can be a disaster. The studies focused on the changes to the brain both in the short-term (when you take it and the days following) and both over the long-term are bad. Over the long-term, though, in particular, it can cause irreversible and extremely treatment resistant depression. I will look later for the studies on pubmed and medline so I can post them here.

For some people it doesn't seem to be a huge issue especially when taken only occasionally...but all the bipolar people I personally know who take it regularly struggle with depression most of the time and wonder aloud constantly why their meds don't seem to be working. I'm absolutely convinced there's a connection.

Yeah, I like Benadryl but take the children's dose (chewable grape :-) as I usually only use it to help me sleep and only very occasionally nowadays as there are other allergy meds and stuff that help better. I have a weird reaction where I use Advil for aches and pains but Tylenol PM is better for me than Advil PM, it has to be in the antihistamine each uses rather than the Advil/Tylenol portion.

Thank you for your words of wisdom and experience January. I am sorry to hear you had to learn the hard way though and hope you have recovered.
