I just got out of a ten day stint in the hospital again. They switched my medications to Vistaril, Lithium and Trazadone. I feel better. The racing thoughts have subsided, but the anxiety remains. Can anyone tell me if they have used either Vistaril or Lithium and how it worked for them?

Thank you.

lithium works great for my bipolar, but vistaril didn't work at all for me, either. it would work for an hour or two, and then nothing. plus, it gave me the worst dry mouth ever.
Thanks for this!

Lithium didn't work well for me when I took it. Got manic with psychosis three times on it with therapeutic blood levels. Also caused alot of hand tremors, and messed my thyroid up, and had to take synthroid for that.
Thanks for this!

Hi Johndsgirl I was on lithium from the time I was diagnosed (2007) until this year. I was just recently switched to lamictal. Every person is different and it does take time to know if a med will work. For me this is at least 3 months. I had the hand tremors too, but as long as I stayed hydrated I didn't get them. Initially I was put on propanol for the tremors and that stops them. I requested a switch to lamictal because I was having issues with depression.

I would suggest tracking your mood (if you aren't already) and writing in a journal helped me. I would include what I ate or drank because that affects my mood as well. I hope this is a good med combo for you.

I am getting the hand tremors, but I think I need to drink more water. I was outside yesterday and got too hot. I think I need to stay out of the heat in the summer with the lithium. Thanks to all for your input.

Johndsgirl, it's certainly something to keep in mind, but I have always loved being out in the sun and didn't stop doing that with any of the meds I have been on. Hydration is key with lithium! I always drank a lot of water even before I was diagnosed, but I needed to drink a bit more when I was on lithium.

Lithium worked fine for me but I had to stop taking because of creatinine (kidney) problems.
