Hi, I have rapid-cycling bipolar. I am on 100 mg buproprion and 7.5 mg L-Methylfolate( it's an extremely high dose of Folic acid which is used in the production of nuerotransmitters) for my lows and 20 mg loxapine, 300 mg Oxcarbazepine for the mania. I still can get bad depression and a controlled more subdued hypomania though. I might try increasing the buproprion and deplin for depression but than I'ld have to increase the antimania drugs too. The deplin really supercharged me with energy and motivation and killed my anxiety for about 3 weeks but then I returned back to normal, which was a real bummer. Anyone else try Methylfolate(Deplin)? My antimania drugs don't seem to have all the side effects like Seroquel so you may want to ask your doctor about the meds I am on. Anyone take these meds and how did they effect your mental illness?
I often get a lot of energy at night but often have absolutly no energy in the mornings. I can sleep for 14 hours straight with no problems. Anyone have similar issues.

Deplin didn't do much for me, even at 15mg a day.

I've never heard of deplin, or folic acid as a treatment for mania...is it a natural remedy? How did you end up on it?

Folic acid is necessary for you to use iron. Also, a lack of folic acid can cause spina bifida in a developing fetus. I have never heard of it doing anything for having to do with neurotransmitters.

The way it was explained to me is that the deplin works to create more neurotransmitters, allowing antidepressants to work more efficiently.

TAKEN FROM DEPLIN WEBSITE:
Deplin® (L-methylfolate) is an orally administered medical food for use only under medical supervision for the dietary management of suboptimal folate levels in depressed patients.

----
From what I read, Folic Acid is manmade and must be broken down to be used. This medication causes a 1 step conversion instead of the 3-4 steps needed to use conventional folic acid.

I also cycle fairly quickly I believe. Currently am flushing Lamictal out so I can go back on Depakote.

I took Deplin with Lexapro and Lamictal. I don't think it did much for me. I gave it about six months, and then stopped taking it. I could be wrong, but I also think it contributed to the rapid weight gain I experienced at that time. Hard to say.

I actually have the exact opposite issue. I have lots of energy in the morning and as the day goes on I become depressed. I have suffered from evening time depression for about 4 years now. A therapist said it could be my eating habits but I don't think it is.
