My psych just prescribed this before bed time - 1mg Risperdal

This was prescribed for my "psychosis", severe mania, and recent unreasonable paranoia.

How was your experience? Will this "dull" me out (which I DON'T want)?

I am currently on 900mg Lith ER, 100mg gabapentin (which I have to double check if I am discontinuing), and 200mg Lamictil.

What are the effects and how quickly in your experiences?

Sorry for the loose and non specific question, but I hate new drugs. I have had not so good side effects with others over the years.
Thanks
Nick

Hi Nick - it is hard to find the right mix. what works for one person might not work for others. For me Seroquel works best for the psychosis especially nightmares. There are some side effects particularly for guys with Risperdal you might want to discuss with your psych. My teenage son was on it for a couple of years and it messed with his hormones.

Good luck -

Jude

I've had risperidone on top of lithium 1.5g and lamotrigine 200mg and was not at all doped out. I felt clearer on it. It was one of the few drugs I didn't mind taking. Had to change to Abilify due to increased prolactin levels.

Good input, thanks.
I will have to do more research on the hormones.
I have a bit of preexisting gyno right now (untreated) so I will keep an eye on it if prolactin levels are affected.

Clear is good, that's how I feel after I take lamictal.

Good luck, everyone is soooo different. Also there is the mix to consider. I was on it before and had some trouble with side effects. I don't recall if it was the Resperidone or the Abilify, but one of them was making me not move my arms when I walked...talk about weird looking--I called it the Barney Rubble arms. I am now getting Zyprexa. I only get that when my usual dose of lithium and tegretol can't keep the mania under control. It helps me sleep then. My advice is just make yourself familiar with what the side effects are so you can recognize them if they crop up. Be prepared to tolerate what is tolerable and they will have to change your meds if it isn't. Just remember there are only so many choices, though.

After my last episode, I went on the risperidone. I'm currently taking a combination of the risperidone along with topamax and that combination has been a miracle. I've been episode free and stable for the past 4 years. For me, the positives simply outweigh the negatives.

For the first 18 months, I was on 2mg risp. daily at bedtime. I did notice it was somewhat more difficult to concentrate and increased grogginess. After going those first 18 months, my pscyh scaled it back to 1mg risp. daily at bedtime, and those side effects greatly improved. I haven't noticed any sexual issues, which I was concerned about at first and did discuss in depth with my pscyh. She assured me it wouldn't be an issue and it hasn't been. It has helped me regulate my sleeping pattern, which is paramount.

Two days on it now before bed.
I know I shouldn't technically with lithium, but I did the two days without lith and lamictal. The gabapentin is being discontinued anyhow. I do this when I start a new drug. Just two days.

I noticed vivid dreams around waking time. Yesterday everything was in a green "filter" and today it was just a strange *** complicated dream. I feel more mellow. Some of the triggers for my anxiety seem to be lessened, but I am chalking up to placebo effect so far ( I am suceptable ).
Anyhow, I am starting my regular meds tonight with this new one, so hopefully good. And no sexual side effects so far, lol.

Thanks for the advice
Nick

My regular meds are Effexor XR 150mg & Depakote 1500mg. When I go high, I'm prescribed Risperdal 1mg. Every time, I'm drowsy all day long, and it's not as effective as Zyprexa.

Everybody reacts differently on those meds...
