Hi everyone!

New to the forum and am hoping to get some help with a current issue. August of 2010 I decided to (with psychiatrist supervision and recommendation) ween off my meds and try to get pregnant. By late October I had succeeded!

I have been doing awesome for over 10 mos without meds, pregnant, and still level-headed ... until NOW!!

I am 34 weeks pregnant and currently on a manic episode. My midwife has no psychiatric knowledge ... my OB refuses to prescribe anything for psych ... my psychiatrist refuses to deal with my while pregnant ... AND the high risk pregnancy specialist is on vacation until June 7th ...

Has anyone here been in this situation? I'm on about 5 hrs of sleep for the past 3 days and I can make my head shut up!!

My "baby daddy" (we're not legally married) is trying his best to deal with me, but he is almost clueless on what to do.

Suggestions??

Your docs need to get their heads out of their asses. Docs don't get to leave on vacation without coverage. someone needs to find who is covering for the high risk specialist NOW. If you can't find someone immediately I would present at the nearest psych hospital or emergency room. There are antimanics that are very useful in pregnancy and nursing if you so choose. i will be praying for you. You MUST get the mania under control.

Abilify is low risk while pregnant, lithium is also low risk in the last trimester, I think seroquel is also ok, get your docs to do something.... there is always a risk with any drug but uncontrolled mania is more of a risk...

Hi there -

There are specialists who focus on perinatal psychiatry, with medication management during and after pregnancy. I needed to see one after my daughter was born so I could breastfeed. My regular pdoc wouldn't prescribe me meds while BF without the consult. I found one in your area, there may be others.

If you can't get anywhere with your regular providers, go up the psych food chain to the specialists! (This clinician is a nurse, but she has expertise in this area and can prescribe.) Good luck! (and congratulations on your pregnancy!)

Thank you soooo much everyone! I will be contacting the specialist dragonfly recommended on Tue. I was finally able to sleep last night and I noticed my mind and my speech has slowed down a little. I was also told to take vitamin B12. Don't know if that was what evened me out a bit, but I have been taking it for 3 days now. I am planning on breastfeeding, so I still want to consult a specialist. I agree that my Drs have been jerks (to put it nicely), but I sort of understand. If something happens to my baby, I can sue and they can get into huge trouble. I will keep the forum posted! My son Jayden is due July 9 and I want to hold him already! I hope everyone enjoys their Memorial Day!
Thanks for this!
