Why so? Why cannot drug companies overcome that. Haloperidol did not do that, but had other side effects. Newer ones beat haloperidol on some neurological side effects, but introduce weight gain to "swap". Geodon that basically does not do it, and that I am on, is considered less effective by many doctors, and probably is. Zyprexa, which is extremely effective, causes massive weight gain in many patients. Why is this a price to pay?
Thanks for this!

I currently am dealing with weight gain from damn seroquel ...25 lbs !its making me down right batty ! I love seroquel becasue it does allow me to sleep which in turm helps me cope better ,,I have issues with anorexia and a 25 lb weight gain in 3-4 months has me flipping out ,, But im also concerned for my health as 25 lb weight gain in such a short amount of time is UNHEALTHY also .. Seroquel can cause diabetes and personally I am sick of constantly feeling starved and needing to eat all the damn time .

I see my Pdoc tomorrow and Im hopefully him and I can figure something else out ...

But yes it does seeem like most all of the medications cause wicked side effects ...Makes me often wonder what is worse..... ME off meds and not eating anything that doesnt move but being very unstable or me on the meds and eating everything and working towards a more stable me ...

Wishing you Peace and Love and Hopefully a good option for your medications

Wonderful article. I applaud this doctor for weighing her patients at each visit. It really shows her concern.

As to me, sedentary job + low thyroid + some intimate time with Zyprexa = 40 lbs. I wish everyone success in shedding them.

Psych meds can change your metabolism, slowing it down so you gain.
Or, they can cause you to be more hungry, so obviously you eat more.
I gained 15-20 with Lithium and it was making me more depressed.
I found out how many calories I need to stay at my weight, and took off 500 calories, write down everything I eat, and burn about 2000 calories a week working out lifting weights(this adds muscle and helps you burn more cals at rest), and doing cardio-kickbox, combat, boot camp.
I have lost about 8 pounds in 6 weeks this way.

I over eat every night since my seroquel was increased. Every day I say "tonight I won't eat at night", then night comes and not only do I eat, but I over eat and it's not health foods either.

All this being said...today I'm going to put in my damn exercise tape (jullian micheals) and start my exercising again. I just have to.

That's why I chose to try lamictal, I can't risk gaining weight because my joints are not in good shape. So far thankfully it seems to be working.

what i resent more is the doctors sneering at me for the weight i've gained due to meds, being mean to me because i don't have other weight-related health issues... blaming ME for having no self control... well, you get the idea... it's bad enough to be "morbidly obese" , with out having to face the medical and cultural distain of it.

Seroquel. Huge gain. I won't weigh myself and I avoid mirrors. I was always thin and toned.....now I'm neither. I can't leave the house to shop and I can't work out because of life altering injuries sustained during a suicide attempt. (Read paranoid psychosis) I'm not having fun.
