I am currently on my journey to finding the right combination of meds, since being diagnosed with bipolar it has been about 4 months, and still tweaking my meds every 2 weeks or so.
How long did it take to find your right combination?

I started trying when I was 17 and I'm now 33 and still searching. I'm really not trying to discourage you. I know a lot of people who felt better after trying one or two. Don't give up.

I have been on the bipolar roller coaster for 11 years, and I have been on many combinations. It's different for different folks. Alas, some meds just seem to be less effective after awhile, or their side effects rear their ugly heads, etc. I suggest just taking it one day at a time. No use worrying about it. You will get stabilized at some point "after awhile," unless you're very unusual.

Besides a few bumps in the road, (a recent one occuring right now), the combo I'm on has been working quite well. It took 2-3 years. At the moment we are increasing the dosage of one of my meds. But, the combo is solid...the dosages just need tweaking. I've been on many different meds so it's nice to finally find a combo that works!
![]() I hope you find something that works for you soon. |

I was stable on my cocktail for two and a half yrs, then kaflouey. Depression. Getting worse for seven months, pdoc added lamictal but that takes awhile before we'll know.
Everyone's different, at different times. We just keep keeping on.

Docs have been trying to find the right combination for about a year now. Started out with one pill and I am currently up to five. Now they are mostly adjusting dosages. From the beginning, I was told by my PDoc that sometimes they hit it right off the bat but sometimes it takes a while to get the right combination. I just keep believing that they will get it right.

Went off my meds over a year ago and just started back (on new meds) in April. Dx'd BP 1 in 2007. With meds I'm always a work in progress.

Find it, lose it, find it again. The longest time I have been stable and not fiddling with my meds was 18 months but then I was having ECT too for one year of that time. So down to six months stable on meds alone since 1999.

Ummm... Which time? They have been "right" many times only for them to go "wrong" later, eventually. Most of the time mine are being tweaked, or only working a little bit. I think the longest I have been stable on meds has been no more than a year. Not trying to crush your hope. I'm just sayin
