Yes it can!! And has done so to me twice.

My doctor told me it probably wouldn't but it indeed did within two weeks. I have also become manic from Zyban, and Amitriptyline. I don't know how common it is but it can happen.

Yes, made me manic.
Have BP II & have only ever been truly manic when they have tried me on AD's.
Thanks for this!

Wow, thank you for the replies? By chance, does anyone remember their dosages, and whether Trazodone was prescribed as an AD or a sleep aid?

thanks!

My late mom, I know for a fact, would become manic from Amitriptyline and she loved it .

I have this odd unsubstantiated belief that reactions to meds can also be hereditary, which is why I am so concerned. But on Thursday night, I HAD to take as a sleep aid because it is the only that works for sure (and I had been getting 4-5 hours of sleep at night and had to leave work citing a headache but in reality to take an unavoidable nap) and I HAD to function at work for a full day on Friday, I could not complain of headaches any more. It worked, it terms of functioning, very well, but now I am concerned about the manic tendencies. I did not take Trazodone yesterday and will see a pdoc on Monday...

Trazadone has never triggered mania in me, though 60 MG of Cymbalta does, but I like that. I was taking 600mg because it was being used as both a sleep aid and an AD. But the hangover effect caused me to have 4 accidents in 6 months. So we dropped the dosage down to 300mg and I'm doing fine now.

Everyone's mileage may vary, but I've been on Trazadone for years (as a sleep aid) and it doesn't trigger mania for me. It (thankfully) knocks me out.
Thanks for this!

How much do you take and do you take every night or "as needed"?

I've taken trazodone as needed in the past. I was on 50 I believe. Made me groggy and sleep a lot. Crazy long dreams too.

I took 400 mgs. (30 min. before bedtime) every night for a long time and I did well on that. I guess my system changed because I started having the "Trazadone hangover". I cut back to 300 mgs. and that seems to be working OK now. Tried to go to 200 mgs. but I was waking up 4 or 5 hours later. My P-doc said try 250 mgs. For me the thing about Traz is the dreams (more often nightmares). They are very vivid, weird, and complicated. I don't feel a need to stop taking it or to change to another med because of them. Guess I'm used to the dreams...I have them about 4 out of 7 nights.

I was using it for sleep on a low dose, not every night. I have to say tho I seem super sensitive to meds, and have become manic from every ad I have ever tried. Hopefully it won't be the case for you.

I know this is an old thread, but YES.

I was just diagnosed bi-polar, which never was clear to my healthcare provider until the Trazadone I was taking for anxiety uncovered the mania in such a way that the doctors finally properly diagnosed me.

I just started taking Depakote last night. I am hoping it helps straighten me out, but I know the drug has mixed reviews.

Well, that explains why my pdoc won't prescribe it for me. I didn't quite believe him when he said it might make me manic, but now that I know it can I'll quit bugging him about it. My sister takes it for sleep and says it works wonders, but then she is not bipolar and I am. I've gotten manic on ADs before, so it's probably best not to risk it.
