Hello friends. I'm Karen. I was prescribed Symbyax recently and have yet to start taking it. I'm considering starting it tonight and just getting over all of my worries about it. I was silly and decided to read everything I could find about it... including other people's bad side effects. Not the best idea. Anybody else get this horrible anxiety every time they start a new medication? I'm sure you do, but I'd like to hear some advice or just... anything encouraging, I suppose. Also if anyone has been on Symbyax specifically and has anything to say about it, I'd appreciate some input. Maybe even Prozac or Zyprexa talk.

Thank you, dears.

Welcome Karen. I haven't been on Symbyax and I know it's hard, but try not to let a meds reputation prevent you from trying it. The side effects people experience vary from person to person and I find the people that talk the most about a med are the one's that found it didn't work or the side effects were bad. I also find that many people don't take a med long enough to truly determine it's effectiveness or side effects. For instance I have been on meds that after 3 months the side effects reduced.

I hope you find this site supportive.

Ah, New Drug Anxiety.

I know how you feel, I was the same way when I started Lamictal because of the bad rash a lot of people got...but I was lucky and didn't have any side effects and it has been a wonderful med for me.

Give it a try, it never hurts to try something. You could find out it is your miracle drug like I did with Lamictal

I don't think it's such bad idea to read the list of side effects... that way you will know what's up IF these occur and in that case you can react to the situation.

But it does not mean it WILL happen. Try to be aware, but no paranoid.

I'm predictable: I call my pdoc about a week after he prescribes anything new, tell him I'm afraid of the side effects, he tells me he's confident I'll be fine, especially given my tolerance of other drugs (can't do lithium! but, oh well).

So, if all else fails...call your pdoc.....they're used to it, I'm sure!

When i brought up my concerns about taking a new drug my pdoc said something kinda funny to me..she said, i wouldnt give you anything that would harm you...and then she said...if you read the adverse side effects for aspirin...you wouldn't take it either...hahah

Not wanting to put your doctor down... but I bet doctors believed they were doing the good thing when applying leeches.

Before you put anything in your body, you need to know the potential risks. They don't have to happen, but sometimes if you don't recognze it's a side effect it can end up badly.

As for the medication not harming me, she knows my physical condition..and the medication was mild (abilify) not a lot can go wrong when your healthy with that medication.

Also just to clairfy She wasn't telling me not to read the list of side effects...she was telling me basically...that they list EVERYTHING....and that can be scary and overwhelming...makes you think it will be a wonder if you don't die shortly after touching the pill to your tongue. So read the side effects...but don't dwell on them.

I am the opposite -- I practically run home after filling the medication to start it. When starting a new med I am usually desperate to feel better and hope that each medicine will be THE medicine.

I feel that way, too, I just let my anxiety get in the way sometimes. I am always eager to get better and that's what ultimately gets me to just make my brain shut up and take the meds.

I had been taking zyprexa and celexa but had bad anxiety/fear so I started symbyax and it made me feel better. I used to take it but it is costly and I had some problems, hair and weight loss, but hope that now I will be okay. If anyone else has taken it for a while let me know please as I would like to talk to someone who takes it. Also is prozac and Zyprexa 3/25 just the same as symbyax? I will have to resort to that as the symbyax is so expensive. I would think if you took them at the same time they would be the same as symbyax right?
thanks, Lou

I feel that way too, but sometimes I just give up and think nothing will work then something does and I feel so different, almost like a different person with no real brain malfunction or fear.

I think you will like the drug, just wonder if you, like me will have side effects (the weight loss is okay the hair loss is not) it also affects my rrheumatoid arthritis, but not too bad I hope.
This is really nice to have people, or even just you, to talk to about this. I think everyone is scared taking a new drug, even if they want to take it.
hugs

Hi Karen, I would love to email because I can't figure out how to get to this place once I leave it. I am starting symbyax as of two nights ago didn't take it last night because my husband was scared I would have trouble but I do need it so am trying it again tonight. I feel so much better on it than off it. the celexa and zyprexa combo made me feel so anxious and fearful. My email is happy24060@yahoo.com if you or anyone taking symbyax wants to email me. I am older and more comfortable with email.
thanks and hugs,
Lou (Sandy)

I understand the feeling, I was given a lot of different meds initially, looking for the right fit. I had some bad reactions to Depakote and the doc told me that let him be the judge. I am having success with Lithium (it's old school but rather tried and true) and Olanzapine (zyprexa). I'm so glad to have found something that works but it was a process...I did gain weight but I have since lost it. Good Luck.

It's not the best idea to put your email in a post on an open forum. Best to send it by private message, which you'll find in the upper right hand corner of this screen.

Yes! It's not just with psych drugs--it's with anything, even over the counter stuff. I despise taking medication and being on anything so the thing of taking something every day and knowing I'll be on it the rest of my life is disconcerting. I just keep in mind that, more often than not, what people post on a lot of sites are the extreme side effects that are highly unlikely to occur. I also keep in mind everybody else is different.
