I hurt my back yesterday and my doctor prescribed lortab. I had never taken it before so he told me it might make me drowsy so to be careful driving etc. Well it has done just the opposite. I am absolutely wired. I've been up since 5 am, worked 16 hours with my back screaming and I'm in no way tired. I'm starting with the racing thoughts and crazy ideas. I took 2mg of ativan and that has done nothing. I'm wondering is it just a coincidence that I'm cycling so soon after the last time or is it the lortab ?

Yes, it can definitely cause mania. I take a lot of pain meds and I have an adverse reaction to the side effects: hyper arousal, not tiredness. You might want to discuss with your doc.

It doesn't cause mania with everyone. I take high doses of pain meds and neither of them have triggered mania in me. Perhaps it is one of those side effects not everyone gets?

Sometimes even just the initial injury and pain can cause mood symptoms. Any injury or illness that disrupts our normal routines, especially in regards to sleep or diet or exercise, can trigger an episode. I had a cold during a depressive episode in December and the lack of sleep triggered my ramping into a mixed episode. It doesn't take much to tip our proverbial apple carts.

I hope you feel better soon.
