Does anyone with Bipolar Disorder also have any irregular heart beat? I have type 1 and have bouts of PVCs and SVT; which means my heart beats irregularly and too fast sometimes. I wonder if they interact somehow or are completely independent of each other.

I have 2 benign heart issues. I think one has to do with valve(s) that don't work right.
I know one makes it skip beats. I was born that way so in my old age it isn't an issue. Can't imagine why it would have anything to do with BP. I would think there would have to be a chemical reaction or imbalance for one to effect the other.

PVC's or premature venricular contractions can be from a number of things...caffeine, stimulants, fear, some meds, stress, and then some physiological things....anyone can experience these at some time. usually these beats are not consistant, are intermittant and doesn't cause alot of problems (unless you are getting runs of them-then it is a different story) So, ya, I guess you could have some if you were manic,
SVT or supraventricular tachycardia is a really fast heart rate that is more a regular fast beat that is not typically from stress, fear, etc this can be more electrically driven or physiological, probably not related to Bipolar |

I have a benign arrhythmia. I don't see how it would be related to bipolar, but with the complexity of the human body, it could be. Maybe a gene that increases risk for arrhythmia is often inherited with another that increases the risk for mood issues. Who knows?

I don't have any heart problems. So I don't know if there is a connection. I think that there is probably a third variable that isn't accounted for.

Yup, born with a congenital heart condition myself, I've had arrythmias in the past, until I had a pacemaker implanted when I was 19.

I have arrhythmia & had a murmur since I was a kid. I was told that stress can trigger it acting up, just as it acting up can cause anxiety. It's not anything to do with bipolar but they ARE capable of interacting.

I never thought about the medications causing it. Mine started off meds. According to the cardiologist I was born with this but it triggered in my 30s, probably due to stress. It began while I was in process of divorce. But it never went away. I have episodes sometimes going long periods of time without symptoms.
I have cardiac cells in my left ventricle that fire independently from the normal firing region. It causes PVCs and acute tachycardia, up to 230 beats per minute. I went through cardiac ablation in attempts to correct it but it was unsuccessful. He thought the firing was in the atria (upper portion of heart) when it actually was in ventricle and its too dangerous to dig around in there. My PVCs are worrisome because at times they've caused insufficient blood flow. Once I had a PVC at a rate of 60 BPM without any other beats. The tachycardia is worrisome because it can go into vtach which is fatal. Anywho, I thought maybe chemical imbalance could cause catecholamine issues. I haven't noticed if these things happen during mania but I will start paying more attention.

I was getting SVT several times a day. I had ablation done at UVA in 2008 but the SVT came back so I had ablation again last summer. That seems to have worked. I do get tachycardia(100-120 bpm) during mania, especially if I am not sleeping.
