Hey guys, my doctor put me on Risperdal about 3 months ago. He monitored me to see if it was effective or not. It did not seem to have any positive effect and only had bad side effects (like gaining 35lbs.). After being on it for 2 and a half months, my doctor told me to stop taking it. Ever since stopping the Risperdal I have had nothing but weird things going on, now into my 3rd week of pure annoyance. I've been in contact with my doctor and he has been no help.
This is what is going on: complete insomnia for first 6 full days (now can sleep, for the most part) dizzy sweating out of nowhere freezing out of nowhere balance problems light headed stomach/gastro intestinal problems constantly exhausted and just need to lay down twitching So that is what is going on and none of that exhisted before taking Risperdal, only started when I was told to discontinue Risperdal. Any ideas? My doctor is of no help. Last edited by johnf22881; Mar 27, 2012 at 04:42 PM. |

Did you stop it all at once or did you taper off it ?
Stopping it suddenly can cause withdrawls .. I took it before but when i deemed it useless my doctor weaned me off over about a 2 week period . Keep calling your Pdoc and get some help ((( hugs)))

The doctor just told me to stop taking it, so I didn't taper off. I am calling my doctor every other day and don't like being told to "give it a few more days" when the symptoms of withdrawal are not fun.

I know how those withdrawls feel, they're gawdawful! I was on risperdal for nearly 2yrs when I quit it cold turkey. N0T FUN. I just waited it out. Your pdoc seems useless, mine would've helped had I asked. Silverlining? Withdrawls don't last forever, hang in there, moniter your symptoms and keep calling your pdoc, he's your SERVICE PROVIDER. (you'd be suprized how many people seemingly overlooks this fact)

I too, went off Risperdal after gaining about 26 pounds. I took some natural supplements which helped with the insomnia and gastrointestinal problems. It wasn't easy but I stuck it out. I agree with the other advice given, keep calling your doc until you get a response. Good Luck!

I'm also withdrawing from Invega. I cut my dosage in half for two weeks and then just stopped altogether. Today is day 6 without it.
My withdrawal symtoms are/were aggitation, nausea, extreme sleepiness, shaking, no appetite, hot/cold feelings. The nausea is manageable with crackers and soda, but the sleepiness is a bother as I have to go to school and work. Last night's sleep was very restless, tossing and turning and waking every hour. Not sure how long it lasts. I've heard weeks to years, with some of it being permanent. I wish I had never gone on this damned drug! |

My withdrawls were over in about 2wks, maybe a bit longer. I experienced all that you are now as well as hallucinations. My gp told me it takes a few weeks to get everything out of your bloodstream...

I was on a low dose of risperdal (1 mg) for almost a year. When I came off, the main thing I noticed was the insomnia. It was hard for me to fall asleep without it.
The best thing you can do is reintroduce the risperdal, and then slowly taper down.

You don't have to taper off a drug if you're already on a very low dosage...like 1 or 2 mg. How much were you on?
Are you sure it is even the risperidal? That sounds odd. |

Oh, I didn't taper off. I stopped cold-turkery. But anyway, risperdal is very potent, and 1-2 mg is not *that* small a dose.

Almost 3 weeks now and the withdrawal is still ridiculous!

John, I hope you feel better very soon. I wish there was a magic bullet, but there isn't. Take lots of vitamins and drink plenty of water to flush it out.
I'm on day 8 without Invega. The nausea is subsiding but I'm still really shakey and light-headed. Having very vivid dreams which I don't like. Not feeling quite as tired today. Taking clonopin for the shakes. Hopefully, this too shall pass. |
