No, I can't tell by just walking past someone, but after I've gotten to know someone, I can often tell

No. Not any more than anyone else can. I don't spend much energy trying to analyze other people for mental illnesses. It takes some pretty clearly defined symptoms and behaviors before I would ever get into the "maybe that person has . . . " mode. By then, most anyone with any common sense would also have reached the same conclusions.
Thanks for this!

Yes, you can tell what is going on with someone by looking at how a person looks at the world, not just crazy people. All it takes is a lot of close attention to detail. I'm paranoid as hell most of the time probably because of it

Now can I say for sure someone is bp? No but, I can spot something that would be classified as "mental illness".

I can recognise psychiatric symptoms in people I've spoken to but I can't tell if people are mentally ill just by looking at them unless they are acting totally ****ed up! Lol

I can't tell if I just met someone. But I can tell if I get to know them. I always think "geez, they're acting ______, I wonder." Then later I find out I'm right.

I would never to say anything to someone unless they were a friend or family member, though.

Yes, I notice that things are not right with some folks, not all folks, and sometimes it
takes time to understand what's going on in their lives (so that I can steer clear of
anything strongly negative that I don't deal with well.)

I remember once meeting someone who didn't like me at all and I had given my best
social effort to be nice to him. Later, I found out that he was alcoholic while all the time I was blaming myself for something that I might have done that offended him.

Crazy sensitivity, I call it. (Pearl Buck has a wonderful description of this sensitivity.)

I can see it in some people just with their mannerism's and personality coming through. My Support Worker said to me she can look at people and automatically notice if someone has a mental health issues. Apparently she said I look 'normal'she doesn't see me as ill I am like her or anyone else. I like the thought of not looking ill, even if I am ill!

I think sometimes you can tell by looking at someone if they are in that stage where their self-care has fallen off. I think I look ill for variouis reasons. For one, my self-care has fallen off a bit. I used to do my hair, put on make-up, pick out pretty jewelry (never went without,) wear matching socks (not just matching together but matching my outfit,) and so on. Used to wear contacts...

Now my hair is brushed and clean but usually wild and all over. No make-up, no jewelry except my ring. I just kind of look thrown together and I can't seem to get it back together. I have recently started putting my hair up into a pony tail every day, I find that a great accomplishment. LOL

The other reason I look ill is when I'm sick i get these black circles under my eyes. The sicker I am the darker they get. My mom was the same way. Since she had cancer it looked like someone had punched her in both eyes pretty much all the time.

I get those circles too. I hate it. I get them when I am in depression like now. I noticed them coming on earlier today. Yuck i wish there was a quick fix, but no one sees me anyways right now.

I can pick up on the little things quite easily as far as an individuals current state of being but I have to know someone for a little bit of time, get to see their full spectrum, before I can get the full picture. I may be better at this type of thing than most people but I wouldn't go so far as saying I've got a gift or something.
