I was just curious. I know there's seasonal depression, I was just wondering if bipolar can be the same?

Yes, bipolar can be affected by seasons. My depressions get worse in the winter, my mania gets worse in the spring. I would call that seasonal. I know there is someone here whose depressions get worse in the summer, so my guess is it is based on each person's reaction to the season.

Yeah, that makes sense. Thanks!
Is it possible for bipolar itself to only manifest during certain seasons? Like for someone to be relatively stable and only have both hypomania and depression during certain seasons? Sorry if that's a stupid question, I'm just curious >_> |

It's not a stupid question, but it is one I can't answer. My mood swings have always been year round. My guess, and this is only a guess, is that since bipolar is a chemical disorder, it would be a year round thing. Seasons can aggravate it, but you would have the same underlying problem regardless of the season.

Thanks again! I was just curious, as I thought some people with seasonal depression only have symptoms during that particular season. And since it's also due to a chemical imbalance, I thought the same might be true for bipolar. I know little about both to be honest. Thanks for your help!

There is a difference between bipolar and seasonal depression. The seasonal affective disorder, or SAD, usually happens in the winter, and doesn't include the mania that bipolar does. It's usually just the depressive episodes.

I get manic episodes in the Fall. It's something to do with the quality of the daylight. My Pdoc said she's heard of a connection, too.

Hypomania/mania in late Spring, Summer and early Fall; depression in Winter and early Spring. I thought it was SAD for about 20 years, it wasn't until I learned about how bipolar has seasonal patterns that I understood why I've had so many mood episodes of varying types all these years.
