I don't believe risperdal is a mood stabilizer, and that is what is need to prevent the "up and down." I think it is an anti-psychotic? maybe they find some work as mood stabilizers to, but apparently not for you. You might try lithium, depakote, or lamictal (which has worked wonders for me, and I have bipolar II as well). I hope you find a way to get stabilized since it can be exhausting to cycle so much.

What is Risperdal?
• Risperdal is an antipsychotic medication. It works by changing the effects of chemicals in the brain.
• Risperdal is used for the treatment of schizophrenia and mania associated with bipolar disorder.
• Risperdal may also be used for purposes other than those listed in this medication guide.

Proper med, and commitment will make you feel better, more stable, but risperdal is an anti-psychotic not a mood stabilizer, your pdoc may have to look further into what he or she prescribed. Sometimes just a change in meds or other added have to be tried, be patient, things will work.
It is also useful when recently DXed to include seeing a talk theripast in addition to pdoc for meds and med monitoring, kind of well rounds the treatment, till yoou get settled. Keep the faith, and know there are others that have been through this, and good can happen.
