Well, I was really suicidal and I just got out of the hospital after 13 days there. I am doing so much better. I just wanted to thank everyone for all the support I received. PC and everyone here has been wonderful.

Lauru, if it's not too personal, could you share with us what they do in the hospital that is so beneficial that makes one able to be on his/her feet again after just thirteen days?

Is it the intravenous work that is the most helpful?
Or is it the intense psychiatric commitment to the patient?
Is it just good, quiet rest with good diet adjustments?

I've often wondered what it is that they can do at the hospital that they can't do for us while we're out here in the world walking around and seeing our psychiatrists as often as they wish.

Thanks for your input.

When you are in such bad shape that you cannot function, you are suicidal, the depression is out of control, what the hospital does for you is (1) allows doctors to make faster, more significant medication adjustments since they can monitor you 24/7 for any problems and I was able to see my pdoc daily so he could adjust meds as needed (2) allows you to be away from outside stresses and be somewhere where you are completely safe from yourself so you can rest physically and emotionally. I've never had any "intravenous" work done inpatient so I'm not sure what you are talking about there. There are groups available to work on various skills, etc., although compared to the two items I listed above, they are of much more minor help. Diet was really not an issue. Food is basic hospital fair.
Thanks for this!

My pdoc basically asked me this as well. He wanted to know what worked. The simple answer is I don't know. I think it is a mixture of things such as I got a break from my life, there were DBT groups, med adjustment, a safe environment, and probably just time. Although where I am from, 13 day stays at mental hospitals are a long time. Most people who are suicidal are only there for 3-5 days. Regardless of what does it, I just knew I needed to be somewhere I could not leave because I could not trust myself to not kill myself.
