I've self-medicated with a very small dose of Elavil for sleep. About 12.5mg. My ex has it as a muscle relaxant for his back pain. It gives me many hours of uninterrupted sleep. But I feel groggy the first half hour in the morning, which I do not like. I am seeing my p-doc in two weeks and wanted to solicit input in the meantime - does anyone use Elavil in small doses, not as an AD but for sleep? Did you find that with time you need to increase the dose?

My mom has taken this almost 20yrs for restless leg syndrome.
She takes at least double, maybe triple your dosage.
That I know of she's never complained of morning grogginess.
Her dose hasn't varied thru the years.
Hope you get more responses, first hand ones.

I am so sorry your p-doc will not give you anything for sleep. For me, sleep is number one concern. When I sleep well, I live. When I do not sleep well, I merely exist/survive. It is that big of a difference.

Wow! I will ask about that, too. RLS syndrome is similar to akathisia. I would have liked to try Abilify but am afraid of akathisia. If Elavil can help, may be I can try them together. I really appreciate your answer.

I've experimented. 12.5 mg of Elavil (without Temazepam, just by itself) produced exactly 8 hours of sleep (with some interruptions though).
Not too bad.
