I just started classes on the 4th, evening classes, and I missed last week's classes due to hypersomnia and depression. It's triggering additional depression. I have to believe that I can do this, and at many levels I do, but it's very difficult for me right now. I've had to withdraw from classes and institutions more than once. The prof posts all the PowerPoint notes online, so I can make up for my poor decisions last week. I am taking off all of the Tuesdays & Thursdays so I don't have the exhaustion leading to over-napping phenomenon. Now I am going to make myself do the readings for my classes and hope this was just a one time thing.

I see a counselor from the university on the 20th and my psychiatrist on the 21st. I am hoping to get support from both. I've been with my pdoc for 8 years now, so he knows me well, but I don't see him very often and he's going on vacation anyway. With the counselor, I should be able to see them at least biweekly, perhaps weekly, and get the more immediate support. This trigger hasn't lead to a depressive episode, yet, and I would like to avert one.

Try cardiovascular exercise - it should help avert a depressive episode. It is a well studied method with hardly any side effects.

Best of luck, TigerLily! Im a student again myself and I know how hard it can be. Even though I have good grades some days I wake up and the depression gives me a list of reasons why I cant do this longer than my arm!

You and me both, TigerLily!! You are definitely not alone! I'm enteringthe fourth week of classes at my university and I've felt myself slipping since day one. It's good that you're going to see a counselor and your psychiatrist. Nip it in the bud before it gets out of control. Finally made an appointment with my psychiatrist but I have to wait until next Monday. Oy.

That's a great plan. I haven't done much exercise since I sprained my knee a few weeks ago, but I should get back on the elliptical. Exercise did always have a way of energizing me. Perhaps I should stop off at the gym after work rather than having a nap.

When you've failed once, your depressed brain just keeps trotting it out again and again. I get good grades myself, when I can fight the depressed brain and do the studying.

That's the plan, nip it in the bud; it's what i've done with triggering from doing shift work and i can do it now.

I hope meeting with your pdoc helps.

Elliptical is a great idea. It is much safer than a treadmill in your situation.
