What's a reasonable amount of time? Granted, if something awful happens, say, akathisia, I will discontinue the trial right away, but given that the side effects are tolerable, when is enough time to make a call?

I'd say with antipsychotics 2 weeks is a good indicator. You are talking about abilify, right?

Id really say atleast 2-4 weeks before you know if a med is really working good for you. Atleast in my case that seems to be the reasonable amount of time. I can usually say yeah this med is really working or I can tell the doc its not working and lets try something new by week 4.

I agree 2-4 weeks should be plenty. I usually wait in between at about 3 weeks to make a decision.

I give most 4 weeks, unless I'm upping the dose (about 2 days to a week) or the psych tells me it takes less time to work (however long he says).

Are you having issues with depression? It does a good job with this. When I first started it I believe it took about two weeks to pull me out of the deepest depression I had ever been in. The second depression was not near as bad just a slip from not having the meds for a week or so, then it took me about 4 or 5 days of taking them again to get it built back up in my system enough to take the depression away again. I believe these new meds they have come out with are great. Least side effects. Im doing really well with it so far. I sure hope it helps you too. Its supposed to help with mania as well. I havent had to deal with this side of it yet.

I need it for mania. Prozac takes care of my depressive side.

Oh ok. Let me know how it works for mania. I have heard it works well both ways.

Hope it works well it helped me a lot for quite sometime, but I was on a super high dose so I got akathesia from the high dose I was on so we switched it to a different one to not have to use such a high dose. I was on 45 mg btw

............. i am somewhat new to all of this so I usually give it 4 to 6 weeks. Often the dose is increased during this timeframe if I am not having side effects.
Thanks for this!

That's what I'm always told is 4 - 6 weeks before you make a decision. But don't assume after that nothing can't happen. I was on the abilify for 6 months before I started having the tardive dyskinesia from out of no where. Just always be wary.

I agree- 4-6 weeks.

What was it about Abilify that you and your doc chose it? I often wonder if I should switch to that in place of the Seroquel, because it sounds like it helps with depression side and is not so sedating.
