Im just wondering if anyone has any experience with getting off of abilify. I am taking myself off of it and didnt know if it is one that has to be gradually tapered or if it is one that they can just stop right away. I am on 15mg. the last 2 wk and was on 10mg for 2 months before that.

I would taper off moremi, going off ap's abruptly can give you what the call rebound psychosis, pretty sure thats missleading .. I don't think you need to have been having psychosis before hand. I am not sure what other side effects you would have.

It wouldnt take to long to taper off I don't think. I went off ap's abruptly many times, but it wasnt real pleasent. Last time I did it over a week and a half, with abilify and it went okay, but I was not on it for very long.

I don't really know tho, hope you get better answers.

I would think that if you cut your pills in half... drop down to that dose for a couple days before going off. it would be safer for you

From what I read just yesterday, you need to taper off.

Ive got to get off this stuff right away its making me crazy all of a sudden. I was fine on 10mg but 2wks on 15mg made me a mad woman. Dan had a good idea to cut them in half for a few days. Then I can maybe go to everyother day.

Is there any possible way to involve your pdoc in this process? It sounds like maybe you are doing something he wouldn't agree with? I think even if that is the case, in most cases you are better off calling and saying this IS what I am doing. Please help me do it safely.

I suggest that because an MD will know exactly how far you can push it. That is, how you can get off as fast as possible w/o doing anything dangerous or likely to make you feel worse. Also, you could ask about the every other day idea. That works really well for some meds and really poorly for others (I think it depends on half-life). Finally, sometimes other meds can be used to help the withdrawal process. For example (I know this is a totally different med) but when I was having a hard time going off paxil, pdoc gave me an rx for ativan and prozac (short-term) to ease the transition.

Good luck!

Do you still have any 10 mg pills? You could drop to the 10, and then cut them in half to make 5 mg. But jut don't go to fast. you will likely noticed a difference between the 15 and 5.

I totally understand why you want to get off it. Did you talk to your pdoc? I know my own pdoc was not helpful for this. Pharmacists are also another good place to ask how to taper off, if you don't want to ask your pdoc.

There is no image on http://www.drugs.com/imprints/a-006-2-8962.html. Are they hard to cut? At least it is a pill, not a capsule.
