I've suffered from cyclothymia for a few years now and it scares people off and even my family is a bit startled by my mood swings (alternate euphoria and dysthymia). I'm unstable and I just wish I were a normal person at times.
It does keep things interesting, though.

Hi my Pdoc thought I might be cyclothymic too but I think it was hormonal (menopause) so we're sticking with bipolar I.

What kind of treatment are you getting? Man I couldn't stand my moods shifting so quickly -the big swings are bad enough.

Yes are you on any meds? If so what? Just wondering. I thought I was cyclothimic for a while but found out I was bp. I know what the quick swings are like though I've been described as a switch.

I have cyclothymia, and it's horrible. Even I don't know who I am. It's the most confusing illness ever. And it really rattles my box when people say "you're not as bad as the bi polar people". Perhaps not but it's bad enough for me. I have bi polar friends and I can be more off key than they are :-/

Cyclothymia is not bipolar? How is what's described above to BPD? I was told at the hospital that BPD was mood swings really up and down and close together. (Which isn't me.)

It's on the bi polar spectrum, not associated with bpd xx

Cyclothymic disorder is a mild form of bipolar disorder (manic depressive illness) in which a person has mood swings over a period of years that go from mild depression to emotional highs.

Episodes of hypomania (see: Bipolar disorder) and mild depression occur for at least 2 years (1 or more years in children and adolescents)

Mood swings are less severe than in bipolar disorder or major depression

Symptoms are persistent, with no more than 2 symptom-free months in a row

Completely different diagnostic criteria. One is a mood disorder on the bi polar spectrum and one is a personality disorder, ergo psychological disorder.

Interestingly though the symptoms are very similar.

Some professionals argue that bpd is a variant of bi polar but the consensus in the psychiatric world is that mood disorders are non discriminatory and episodes will happen with no trigger, and that bpd moods are reactive to surrounding situations unto the individual. Ie triggers.

Like me, I can get depressed for no absolute reason at all. Cyclothymic mood swing. Then I can get depressed if someone hurts me... Bpd mood swing.

The main differences between everything tho is with bpd there are abandonment issues, self harm typically but not always (I don't self harm), and identity disturbances.

I just ave a bit of it all thrown in together... And it can be ghastly

I know what it's like to withdraw from your meds, it was so hard to wean myself off Leponex, which is a heavy-duty drug. I couldn't sleep for days on end and would heave up everything I'd eaten.
*tight hug* I hope your sleeping cycle gets back to normal and that you manage to tone down your mania. I feel for you and I'd like to get to know you better.
You'll be fine.
Thanks for this!
