I just found out that I will have a new insurance company as of tomorrow. Husband swears he never saw any notice of this change, just emails stating that if you want to keep your same coverage, to do nothing. We're hoping it's a mistake because the CA people already use this company, United Healthcare, but the NC people have always used Cigna. While my husband's group in based in CA, he has always been provided the coverage here, in NC.

Does anyone have any input on the "friendliness" of United Healthcare towards mental health care. From what I read on their website, they very much push their own clinicians, and even state to call their health line if there is a mental crisis. I am wondering if my son and I will have to go through reevaluations, and our therapists' practice doesn't even accept this insurance. I am afraid I am in for a pain in the arse!

Naturally, I have a t appt. scheduled for tomorrow, 1/1!

Sorry to hear it.

I had United when my oldest son was born. I didn't have any treatment or help then. But, I know they were very good to me for maternity. But that was 10.5 years ago... and every insurance is different based on their plan, not just the company itself. It's very complicated and annoying. I hate insurance.

Why not call the new insurance company. I know once I changed insurance companies and had been seeing the same tdoc for years. She didn't have an agreement with the new insurance company. They made an exception and covered my therapy for a year.

My family had united healthcare years ago, I remember my parents having to pay out of pocket for my pdoc and t, then once every few months send in receipts and get a percentage paid back, I think we had to use out of network because in network psych drs could only be used for a certain amount of weeks. Coverage was really good on my meds, I recall only paying $10 copays. This was 10+ years ago though, sure things are different now.

Our therapists have offered a sliding scale amount, so I'm going that route. One of my mental quirks is that I avoid phone calls. The thought of having to discuss my treatment with strangers who have the power to determine my options panics and infuriates me at the same time.
I hate that we must depend on insurance to get decent healthcare, and also I feel resentful that there are many fellow Americans out there who can't afford insurance, so they get awful or no healthcare.
