In August of 2011, I had a brief moment of sanity during a psychotic manic episode and asked my roommate to take me to the hospital. I hadn't told her about my diagnosis and recently found out that she told the hospital I must be on drugs. When I got there, I told them to look in my wallet (I have a card with my diagnosis written on it) and I was rushed to a psychiatric hospital.

I'm finally sane enough to look at my discharge papers, and this is my discharge diagnosis:
Axis I:
- (296.44) Bipolar I disorder, most recent episode (or current) manic, severe, specified as with psychotic behavior (This is accurate. I was completely psychotic.)
- Polysubstance Abuse (Abusing three or more psychoactive drugs, often simultaneously.)

Here's the thing. I don't abuse drugs, and the hospital never did any drug or blood tests. They just took my roommates word as the truth and sent me straight to the psych hospital.

I'm pretty upset and want to cry. Is this an instance of my physicians being irresponsible, or am I overreacting?

Oh wow, that is not an overreaction. You need to contact the hospital and make a complaint. Or, have your T or pdoc make that call. That's ridiculous.

Okay. I just sat there staring at the paper. I may have been crazy, but I wasn't abusing drugs.

You need to tell them that the person who brought you to the hospital is not a spokesperson for your health. That you had no blood tests done. You need to complain. This is terrible.

Oh that's horrible. I hope they will correct it easily for you. Where are you from? They always do a lot of blood tests here in California.

I'm actually from California, but they didn't do a single test. Which is weird, because the Student Health Center at my university tested me the first time I became manic. This hospital just sat me on a bed in the hall until the ambulance came. I have my medical records from both hospitals, so I'm going to use them to prove that I wasn't tested.

That's crazy how can they say your polysubstance abuse without testing you? It seems like your roommate told some lies about you. I hope you get it sorted out soon.

That could be the case. We never got along. I'll probably go in next week.

You should really complain. That is not good at all! I would be so angry! I hope this gets sorted out for you!
