It has been years since I was willing to sit down and talk to a therapist. I have an appointment to see one on Thursday now. I am very nervous. What the heck should I expect????

Well I guess expect them to be an outside party that can give you ideas for ways to Handle things. Mine helps me see things differently.

It can be difficult to find a therapist (T) that you click with so don't be discouraged if this one doesn't work. You need to be able to trust them and open up to them about difficult topics. Also there are different styles of counselling so you need to find one that fits you.

I think Ts help us to see why we react the way we do and how to cope with situations in a more positive way.

I always feel vulnerable and exposed after a visit to a T so be prepared to feel a bit worse off while you are working through difficult issues. It is worth it when you can change the way you react to situations for the better.

Good luck and keep posting.

What to expect... depends on you. First appointment is usually why are you there and what do you want to work on.

I use mine for complaints, learning to trust the MH system, and major glaring issues. She doesn't usually give me different points of views or coping skills. We're still working on focus and vague stability.

My husband uses his T for a "normal" person's view of things and comfermation of if he's over reacting.

We use MT for translation between us and knowing where each of us our on our mood swings so we can help the other.

We use son's T for him to have a trusted adult outside family.
