I started having problems with anxiety a few months ago. I was put on Ativan and I just recently tried to go without...my way of cutting cost anywhere I could. Well the last few days have not been good anxiety wise. Today I refilled my Ativan.

Are there lots of ppl with Bipolar that have regular anxiety problems? If so what med do you take for anxiety?

I do have problems with anxiety. I freak out soooo easily and work myself up over things.

I use Rescue Remedy...and try to use mindfulness and all the jazz.

Ativan can cause anxiety from its withdrawal.

Its important. To research benzos before you drop them.

I have had bouts of anxiety, and cardio exercise worked better than Klonopin (a benzo similar to Ativan). I do not have them now. But in general I would try cardio before Ativan.

I think the rise in heart rate is what does the trick for anxiety. Anxiety is a physiological response, so it makes sense to fight it using physiological tools.

I've been having attacks all this week.

So yeah, it's been a constant with me and whatever else I experience.

And on the flip side short bursts of intense exercise can trigger anxiety attacks. My former therapist explained this to me. I didn't have that happen but I got really sick and was unable to get out of bed and this triggered a depressive episode completely with all the bad depressive thoughts.

I was so sick and tired and at one point I was cold but it was too much effort to move so I just lay there for a few minutes until I could work up the energy to rearrange the blankets. I told her I hadn't felt like that in a long time. My therapist said she wasn't surprised I was feeling depressed and having those thoughts that sometimes situations can happen where the body and brain get confused.

Her example was that of someone with anxiety who runs up a flight of stairs and then has an anxiety attack. The attack was triggered not by emotion but by the physical symptoms - heart racing, shortness of breath, sweating, etc. And the brain interpreted that as "anxiety" not "exercise".

Yea, I have anxiety problems. I used to have daily panic attacks do bad I was afraid to leave my bedroom to go to my bathroom thinking I'd have a panic. I've learned to cope with anxiety a lot better since then. Rarely have a panic attack and now I'm aware of what it is so, I just go with it. Really, it's just disordered anxiety. Meditation has help so has just facing it. I know some of the anxiety I have isn't appropriate so I face my fears head on.

Only a few months after being terrified of leaving my room I was on a 16 hour flight moving half way around the world. I guess I'm stubborn.

Now my anxiety only gets to be a bother when my mood is out of whack. Sure, anxiety isn't technically a bipolar mood symptom but, when your senses get so big, colours so bright and the world feels like its closing in on you, mind racing, hearing things and nonsense ideas out of no where, who wouldn't be anxious? I have a hard time believing my "mania" is actually manic and not really a very optimistic take on anxiety. If feels good to be in a constant state of panic.

I've definitely had panic attacks triggered by the physical effects of exercise. The shortness of breath gets to me the most. It's a terribly ironic course, considering that exercise is supposed to be good for mental disorders including anxiety. I really like the way your therapist described the confusion. I guess moderate exercise is what you really need to be working yourself up to.
