There have been some studies that link bipolar with migraines. Now a http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/1...&itool=EntrezS new study found that a family history of bipolar disorder also increases the risk of having migraines. And other good news, Topomax, which I take for my bipolar, http://bipolar.about.com/cs/topamax/...pmigrain.htmis good in preventing migraines! Since I also take blood thinners for a blood clot in my lungs last fall, probably indefinitely, I need whatever I can get to prevent migraines as there aren't too many pain relievers I can take outside of the hospital that aren't Tylenol.

Are these two beasts linked? It seems they are. My sister gets migraines, too, though she has never been diagnosed bipolar. I hope my children never get either one of these monsters. And that they are: Monsters!

Moose, I didn't know about the NIMH findings, but I do know that wheat is very
capable of causing migraines in people sensitive to it.

Thanks for this.

I wonder if the reverse is true---if having migraines predisposes one to BP. All of the women in my family has or have had them, with the single exception being my 27-year-old, and all of us have had some sort of mental health issue (although I'm the only one actually diagnosed as bipolar). My migraines haven't recurred since I went through menopause, though...guess I got lucky on that score. But I'm definitely still bipolar.

My younger brother used to have terrible mood swings accompanied by migraines. Since two of my cousins, my aunt, three uncles, and myself have all been diagnosed Bipolar, the assumption was that he also has it. His gp suggested that he see a neurologist before considering a visit to a pdoc. As it turns out, he has bilateral Temporal Lobe Epilepsy. He was having seizures every few seconds, but we were clueless because his seizures are nonconvulsive. Apparently TLE can mimic Bipolar. I'm planning on visiting a neurologist, but I've never had a migraine. I probably just have BPD.
