Hi Everyone,
Please list coping mechanisms, life style changes and routines. That are your holly grail for managing bipolar disorder.
What would you recommend or suggest to someone newly diagnosed?

- that would easily be sense of humor for me - not taking things too seriously. Beats everything else!

- social contacts

- should go back to cardio exercise
Thanks for this!

Therapy and meds are my best coping measures.

Worst strategy is self harming.

For the newly diagnosed, I'd suggest that they research the heck out of their diagnosis and stick to meds and get in some type of therapy.

Having a warped sense of humor is one of the only 2 things that get me through a bad patch. Writing is the other, and it's a good thing I can do it well, for surely destruction would abound if I didn't have this kind of outlet for the rage and the frustration (and also the really neat experiences). I also get paid for it every now and again, so that makes it even better.

You know, I forgot a couple things---prayer and (sometimes) physical activity. Prayer is very centering and calming; physical activity gets out a lot of the aggression and anger I experience. Yep, when I get pissed I go under the headphones and clean something or work in the yard.....nothing better!

Good sleep hygiene. For me that means going to bed at about the same time every day, getting up at about the same time and wearing my CPAP every night.
Thanks for this!
