I have recently been diagnosed BP and now I am wondering what is next.

To share a bit of my story, I have been treated for anxiety and depression for the last 5 years. I am currently taking Effexor 75mg, Abilify 5mg and Seroquel 300mg (at night).

I feel a little lost now. Even though BP runs in the family, my father and sister have it, and I had a hunch I had it too (for many reasons too long to get into in a single post), I am still a little shocked. What started out as an anxiety disorder is now BP.

My big concern now is have the meds I have been taking been treating my BP effectively. I don't have the "can't get out of bed" depression or the "I feel like a king" hypomania since I have been on them but I have been through a few things, most recently having come back from a three month separation with my wife. I now have a one year lease that I signed and furniture that I bought that has put me more into debt.

I thought the meds were working but I am freaking out a bit that I may still experiencing issues even though I am being treated.

Meds don't cure us, you will definitly still experience issues being medicated, unless you're lucky enough to go into remission. They don't stop the cycles or episodes. All they do is (hopefully) minimize the intensity of bipolar and make life more liveable.

As for what's next, aquaint yourself with bp. Get to know how and when it smacks you around, and work on ways to minimize that. Good sleep hygiene, healthy diet and exercise have done a world of good for many folks in managing their symptoms.
Thanks for this!

I would also suggest a counsellor who is familiar with mental illness. I found a free one through the county that is very good. She helps me see solutions instead of problems and fear. I don't know about your meds. For me, it takes months to find the right combo, then they will work for awhile. Then they quit and I have to start the guinea pig trials all over.
Well, enjoy your new furniture at least! Mine's old and tattered!
