I haven't been on any type of bipolar medication or mood stabilizer for 2 weeks now. My sister (whom I spend like everyday with) has even said that she doesn't see anything abnormal about me or my "mood swings." She said that she doesn't think I am worse than the average person when it comes to that. I feel like the prior meds (Lamictal, Seroquel) were actually making my mood swings worse and my sister said she "thought the meds were effing with me."

So if I am not on any type of mood stabilizer and I am functioning is there a chance that I'm not Bipolar after all?

Hi!

I am not going to pass judgement on you because it was your choice to stop your meds.

Personally, I went 3 years without meds. I thought I didn't need them and they were just messing me up. Then BOOM! All the symptoms came back and I was back in the hospital.

Most likely if you were diagnosed Bipolar you will always be bipolar. That's just my personal opinion though because I am speaking from experience.

You don't want to have everything you ever wanted later down the line and end up in the hospital. That's what happened to me. I was doing great, great job, in the best shape, happy with myself, and I got triggered and I don't even know how and I lost it all because I was hospitalized because I quit the medication.

Do you have a T? Maybe talking to a professional about your mood swings will help.

Good luck

Since it's only been a few weeks I'd be hesitant to say that. It might just be that you're not episodic at the moment. I'm in the same camp as Platinum: if you were diagnosed bipolar (given that it was a correct diagnosis to begin with) then you will probably always be so.

I've also been under the understanding that if you take medications intended for any kind of mental illness and you do not have it you will either get very fatigued or nothing will happen at all. Given that you said it made your mood swings worse it's probably more likely that that particular combination wasn't good for you.

That said I hope you continue to feel better!! But I'd give it a little while longer personally.

I have to.say even though I also want to get off my meds- or at least change them, I agree with this post. Maybe it was just withdrawal, but on the fifth day no meds I felt like i was going completely crazy.

I didn't quit the meds. I weaned off of them after a temp pdoc verified I was having an allergic reaction to one (Lamictal) and that the side effects of the other (Seroquel) were just too much. Then he put me on the Neurontin and Wellbutrin from what I understand have nothing to do with Bipolar.
