I was just put on Topamax for migraines. Does anyone have any info about this med? Does it work for migraines? I hear it helps with weight loss.

I had anorgasmia on it. I reduced geodon, recovered orgasms to some extent, then was put on Topamax and lost all drive and capacity for orgasms. Even on the tiniest dose.

I also was dizzy and had a whole laundry list of other negative side effects. I stopped after a month.

the thing is, after I stopped, I have gained weight and it seems unexplainable since I eat LESS now. Maybe it is the weirdness of my body. Maybe it is the metabolic system getting completely out of whack by my having taken meds that cause gain and then topamax.

So I am not sure.

It did not do that much for migraines.

Here is my old thread:

Topamax has arrived - Forums at Psych Central

I had memory issues when first out on back in November but they've gotten better. I other problems that I know of. Any weight loss is overshadowed by Zyprexa.

Geodon was awful for me, and Topamax has been awesome for my migraines...I have only had a few over the past few years whereas I used to get one almost every day. My neuro said its about a 50/50 split for people having a good or bad reaction to Topamax. I have had no side effects at all (except some weight loss). I know it can sometimes effect you cognitive ability (as mentioned in the other threads), which can be one negative side effect, but this did not happen to me.
It's worth trying out though and seeing it through your max prescribed dose to see how you do, if you can. It's been a life saver for me since I had migraines since I was about 7. And I did lose weight, too, as mentioned...it effects how your metabolism works. Hugs to you and I hope you have a good outcome with it.

Ugh Topamax. I was on Topamax for a while when I was 17. I was in this weird study where they were trying a bunch of meds to see their effectiveness to treat childhood obesity. I didn't lose a significant amount of weight on Topamax alone. I hated Topamax and in hindsight, I think it was because I was blaming the drug for being depressed because I didn't want to admit that it was much more serious than a drug causing my issues. So I can't really talk about Topamax for migraines, but I can tell you not to expect to drop more than 5 to 10lbs

I was on Topamax as a mood stabilizer, not for migranes, but it was awful! It made me so tired, I couldn't do anything besides sleep. It literally made me fall asleep while I was driving. I didn't see any weight loss either.

It impaired my cognition just a bit, but that "just a bit" totally stunned me. I normally am a very good speller - meaning, if you wake me up at 3AM and ask me to spell anything, I would. So even though I was advised that I could develop difficulties with spelling, I could not picture, in my mind, how I personally could develop such difficulties.

And then I logged on this forum and could not remember how to spell Moose' userid. The word was in my mind but I could not remember how to spell it. It was an eery feeling and I find it hard to describe, but I did forget how to spell Moose. (it is not that I forgot the 72 in Moose' userid, which would have been understandable - I could not spell the word "Moose" itself).

Confused, thanks for suggesting a thyroid check. I will ask for that.

I am afraid of that side effect cause I am good at spelling and kind of a perfectionist about it so I am going to get annoyed with myself if I can't spell things correctly.

I used to take Topamax, then freaked out thinking it interacted with my birth control. Havent gotten a straight answer from a dr on that. I lost like 20 lbs when i first started it. I still had some migraines, but not as severe. Then my pdoc prescribed it for my mood swings. I didnt think it helped much, but after a year of being off it, i see a big difference. So i hope i can take it again soon.

Topomax really gave me brain fog after being on it for awhile. I did lose 30 lbs on it but am gaining it back now that I went off of topomax. Rather have my brain power back...

I was explaining this to my t the other day in terms of mips and bips- which of course I also had to explain! I told him I didn't mind when I started on topomax, that I figured I could lose a few cycles, a few mips, and still be on par if not still ahead of the rest of the pack. But it took me over ten years to remember the terms mips and bips, so maybe I overestimated myself!!

I also had trouble spelling when I was taking it and I usually am a very good speller.

I hated topamax. I lost my memory. Couldn't think of words. Couldn't read music anymore. I was like a zombie. My pdoc made me stay on it for months. I hated it. Only good part was loosing 20 kg.
