Ive been taking it since last fall, oct i think. Since i've been having trouble losing weight (i gained from taking a couple other meds) i thought i'd check to see if celexa can cause weight gain too. I was surprised to see that it "can induce mixed states in bipolar disorder" ok?....so y did my pdoc put me on that. I am no longer seeing him btw, an insurance issue. I know all meds have side effects, but i kinda dont get why he put me on this. My mood swings r extremely messed up and I really really hope med changes can help me. I have been just getting more and more depressed. I dont really like being manic anymore, yeah i actually used to. It just freaks me out.
Anyway, sry for rambling, just wondered if anyone else had exp with celexa thx

I've been on Celexa for 4 years. I started at 5 or 10mg and now take 40mg. I never had problems with weight gain on it. I was on it with Trileptal and stayed fairly stable for a few years. I hope you find something else that works for you. I know for me, I have to switch about every 6 months. It's awful. But everyone is different and I am sure you will find something that gets helps the mood swings.
Thanks for this!

I took it a very long time ago and did not experience weight gain; to my knowledge that's not a problem with it, but I'd look it up/ask your pdoc.

I wouldn't worry as much about it setting off mania if you are also taking a mood stabilizer -are you taking one? If not, I'd ask your pdoc about the chances of it triggering mania, he/she would hopefully be familiar with the studies/know the frequency with which it causes this.

I am taking Lamictal as a mood stabilizer. My mania or hypomania (not sure which category it falls under) has been occuring much more frequently since I started taking it, now that I notice. I am in between pdocs at the moment.

also take lamictal along w the celexa as well as a few other things, to keep from manic episodes. Bothered stomach for a while, dosage had to be upped. Have to watch weight gain, but I exercize and watch diet for this. Take before bed cuz makes me so sleepy. Def helps keep blues away, for me, I think. Been a few years.

I take a baby dose of Celexa; a therapeutic dose sends me into mania so I can't have any more than 10 mg. I also don't seem to be able to come off of it---I tried last summer and was a raging biatch, so I went back on. Doesn't do anything for my anxiety but it sure keeps the depression at bay.

I take it, started out with 20 mg, then they tried to up it 40. That didn't go over too good, too much medication, so we cut it back to 20 and it works just fine. I also take mine with a mood stabilizer, Topamax. I haven't had any side effects from it that I've ever noticed, no weight gain or anything else, unless I forget to take it. Then I know about it.
Thanks for this!

I took it, I loved it until my jaw started randomly locking. I too can only take 1/2 or less of a regular anti-depressant with out sending me spiraling into a mixed or manic state. It was the best anti-depressant I have been on. I would go to your county mental health until you find a new psychiatrist.

I have Bipolar I disorder with psychotic features. I take a very small amount of celexa (10 mg) since anything higher causes full manic episodes with psychosis. However, in low doses celexa manages my depressive episodes very well. My psychiatrist and psychologist pay really close attention to when my moods start to shift. I have had no weight gain from the celexa. The weight gain came from my atypical antipsychotics. Read the package insert for celexa if you want to know if the medication causes weight gain. You can Google it and see for yourself.

yes, know what you mean bout the mania danger. Also, a lot of publicity out there now re ADs triggering BP mania. My Pdoc just told me he is considering tapering me; mmostly for the last few years though, I have tended toward the depression, so a little nervous. . . .I'll know next month!

I am going to see about Topomax if doc is interested and I can afford, and is it covered. My bro and a friend take and like very much and have few side effects and no weight gain!

This is the way I feel about it, too, sheltie, and what I found out, as well. Gonna speak with my Pdoc accordingly next month. Thanks!
