Well I went to county mental health today and was told that they can give me therapy but they only provide psychiatrists if you are BP I with history of hospitalizations and arrests, Schizophrenic, or psychotic. So I can bug my primary care doc to send a referral for a specialist if I really want to pursue help. But essentially mental health won't do anything for me unless I am ready to kill myself or something.

It could take months to get into a pdoc, I don't know if I should even bother. I'm super depressed but not suicidal so it is hard to know what the right thing is. Not even sure I want to go back on meds. I need to function right now but no one will help me right now, so frustrating!

Do you think you could manage with therapy alone and see what the therapist comes up with? Maybe he/she could pull more weight if it became obvious that therapy alone wasn't going to cut it. Or maybe therapy would work. I've always been pro meds even with my kids and their issues so I can't say I am unbiased. I will do whatever it takes not to feel like crap for any longer than I have to, I'm very proactive with my treatment.

Can't your GP prescribe you what you need? Especially if you've been on it before. Just an idea.

My GP doesn't feel comfortable providing med management for mental illness beyond straight depression. They're referring me to an outside agency for the therapy so the T won't be able to do anything about meds. All I can really do is ask GP for psych referral and wait 2-4 months to be seen.

I guess what I would do then is get the referral to the pdoc and do the therapy while you wait, and continue doing therapy after you've been seen. Even though you don't get manias, the depressions are bad enough to warrant treatment and you have so much on your plate to deal with already. Why take chances ya know?

Sorry to hear that. I guess if it gets bad enough you can always go to emerg. Hope you find a better answer than that though

2 -4 months isnt that long to wait, at least it isnt here, even when you are an established patient. What have you got to lose by getting the refferal?

When I'm having a hard time functioning right now it doesn't help me to see someone that far out. I guess I'm going to have to start taking 5HTP and hope it doesn't send me hypo. I'm mostly frustrated.
