So in the midst of a nervous breakdown I was thrown into a hell like I never knew existed. So depressed I couldn't get out of bed but with wicked racing, repetitive thoughts. Bipolar, BPD, and PTSD in full force all at the same time. Life was hellish and painful, no real sleep no real awake. Nothing made sense.

I was about to go to the hospital, and I decided to go to my doctor first. I told her how I was feeling, and that I was afraid of becoming dangerously impulsive. She decided to try me on Risperadal.

Within three hours I was a new person!

I felt like I should have been on this med all along. The peace was magical.

The problem is that I have put on 40+ pounds and now the weather is drying out I am developing plaques of scabby dry skin. Thanks to Nioxin, my hair is growing back in, but the initial hair loss was a little alarming.

My weight has stabilized because of adding Topomax, but its not coming off easy and I still have wicked carb cravings at night.

Any advice? Anyone been through it?

So glad you're feeling better!

Sorry I don't have any personal experience with the drug.

I feel the same way. Risperdal knocked my delusions out in about ten days. But I've also gained weight on it. Of course I don't have a particularly excellent diet, nor do I exercise. But I know it was from the risperdal because it happened in about two weeks. And it marks super hungry those two weeks.

I think I may have to go off of it because of raised prolactin levels though. I haven't discussed this with my pdoc yet.

Anyway I think the best thing to do is diet and exercise and also decide for yourself whether this weight gain is something you can live with in case it just doesn't come off.

I'm learning to live with my new body albeit grudgingly. But my weight gain wasn't as drastic. I know there are people on the board who refuse to deal with any side effects and that's o course their own choice. I feel for me that I'd rather deal with a side effect than go through what I went through without risperdal.
