I have been taking a small dose of edibles to help me sleep. I have done it, on and off, but mostly on, for slightly over a year. It is a good medicine, except that it does not always work - I sometimes have to take a Zyprexa or a clozaril (the smallest dose) to make sure I sleep. But most of the time cannabis works very well, and I am pleased with having found a side-effect-free medicine.

In the short term I can see how it can be very appealing for it's relaxing properties.
However in the long run I think it will do more harm then good. Marijuana is a hallucinogen and I strongly believe any hallucinogen is bad for people with bipolar and schizophrenia. I used to be a frequent user of marijuana, dxm, and lsd and honestly wish I have never touched these drugs since I believe they contributed to the development of my disorder. A bad trip felt just like the moment when mania goes from euphoric to nasty for me (intrusive thoughts, tired but wired feeling). While marijuana is a softer psychedelic I don't think it it too good for us either. |

I smoke on a fairly regular basis. I have been recently diagnosed with bpd & bpd (which sucks, but explains a lot) and I haven't had any problems so far. I used to smoke daily at night, but stopped when the psychologist said it was "bad". I like to use it when my anxiety is high or I can't sleep. Things are going good so far.
I really feel like this is an individual thing. Everything doesn't work for everyone, but for me it's doing wonderful things. |

I have used cannabis over the years usually recreational rather than for medicinal purpose. I haven't had it for about 10 years now, mostly doesn't fit with my lifestyle. I would consider it if it was legal and helped with my bipolar management.
On another note the pharmaceutical meds can also be dangerous and toxic....... |

It worked for me for a few months, now it makes me paranoid and depressed, so I'm pretty much done with it.

I find that when I use it I feel neither extremely down nor hypomanic. It does help me sleep but because of my living situation right now I can't smoke unless I have the house to myself which isn't very often. So at the most I will use it twice a week if that.
I believe there are many medical uses for it though and I love reading and watching docos about it. ![]() |

Seriously?
With all those toxins like cadmium, arsenic, lead and tons of others in cannabis/ganja smoke you expect it to cure bipolarity? Don't we have the understanding of origin of bipolarity as a condition developed from chemical imbalance/toxicity/hypersensitivity to environment and many others? Come on. Bipolarity has nothing to do with Genes. I smoked cannabis/Ganja for a long time before I knew I was bipolar. Quitting smoking cigarette and cannabis/ganja has been a great help managing my bipolarity. I really wonder if I would still have had Bipolarity breakout had I not smoked Ganja in my teens. |

ANY type of brain altering chemicals in your teens can affect you long term. The same can be said about ADHD meds, alcohol, antidepressants, benzos and antipsychotics...

Cannabis has been a massive help to me. It cheers me up when I'm down, helps me relax when I'm manic, and it's the only thing that helps me have a normal sleep pattern. That said, it can make you paranoid (I'm naturally paranoid so I probably don't notice that happening to me). At the end of the day, whether it works or not and how it affects you depends on the variety, and the person. From my experiences, I recommend it.

Any mind altering substance in a developing brain can cause issues later in life.
Meds that are used to treat mental disorders in adulthood are not recommended for use in children or teenagers, whats the difference between that and using marijuana to treat symptoms (in adulthood)? Marijuana does have beneficial effects for some people with bipolar. Just like regulated psyc meds, they do not work the same for everyone. Last edited by Anonymous200280; Jan 16, 2014 at 05:57 AM. |
