I've been doing a little research. But first a little back story...

I've had problems with my right shoulder for about 6 years. I have pain that can be intense, but that comes and goes. Like, it will hurt for a couple weeks to a month, then it will go away, sometimes for months at a time. I actually went off of work for it in July, and spent a lot of time with an orthopedic surgeon and in physical therapy. I had x-rays done of my neck and shoulder, MRI's of both my neck and shoulder, and a nerve conduction study of my shoulder. Everything came back normal. There's no swelling, no bruising, no injury. I've had plenty of sprains and stuff before, and usually some ibuprofen is enough to at least take the edge off the pain, but my shoulder is another monster all together. Powerful narcotics may take the edge off, but they don't get rid of the pain. I've been prescribed Narco, Vicodin, and Tramadol for it, and none of them get rid of the pain. I mean, the pain can get so bad, like last night, where even taking a seroquel, I can't sleep because every time I move, it's agony.

So anyway, I've been reading into Somatoform disorders, since the next step seems to be that it's just in my head. Well, Pain Disorder seems to fit. However, one of the criteria for it is that no other psychiatric conditions are present. Well, as long as there is no mood or anxiety disorder present, anyway, because they say that those can account for unexplained pain. I've not heard of mood disorders causing physical pain like this, has anyone else? Or does anyone else have any other ideas? I'm getting really tired of being in pain when no doctor seems to even be able to tell me why. I just want an answer.

Ok, resently I was prescribed a muscle relaxer for pain in my hip. It really has helped, pain medicine would not have helped as they realized that my hip is no longer turning properly it's just poping in and out of the socket as I walk, sit, or move. I would ask for a motion test, and an mri (to check if you no longer have cartalige in your knee.

This is probably a shot in the dark, but have you been checked for Fibromyalgia?

The criteria can say no other disorders should be present but it doesnt mean you're not still suffering from the disorder. I think they say that because they like things to be clean cut, but they are not. You could most definitely be suffering from that disorder even if the rule book say you cant because of bipolar.

I was diagnosed by 2 different doctors (a gyno and a pdoc) with PMDD, but its criteria says mood disorder cant be present. It is so obviously PMDD, so my doctors have still diagnosed it as that. Completely fits for me, there is no debating it in my mind or theirs.

Fibromyalgia has crossed my mind, but it is generally wide spread pain, and mine is only my one shoulder.

If I get poked in ribs or even touched it feels like a deep bruise for 10 min. Very sensitive skin. Hurts when I lightly scratch my leg. Every doc can't explain, except my spine specialist. Says my back is so messed up that it is effecting other systems. Not sure if I buy that explanation, but at least it's an answer. Maybe it's another angle you can look into. Just thought I would share.

Thanks for sharing. They thought it might have been a pinched nerve in my neck but my MRI showed nothing abnormal. I do want to ask though if the nerve conduction study only tested my motor neurons cause maybe it's a sensory neuron problem.
