I know a lot of people say they don't eat very much while manic because they're too busy doing other things. However, I seem to eat ALOT while manic. Food just seems to taste so much better. Does anyone else get this way, or am I just an oddball?

Hey OutlawedSpirit, I'm exactly like you!! When I'm hypomanic everything pleasurable is very appealing! For some reason I tend to crave a lot of protein when I'm hypomanic and when depressed crave carbs more!

I always like carbs. I can't imagine ever giving up my carbs! I do know when I'm depressed I like snack food more, I want potato chips and chocolate. When I'm getting manic, I like more complex, savory food.

I wouldn't say I eat less when I am manic, but I would say I enjoy food more. I tend to make better dietary choices when I'm manic. When I'm slipping into depression I find I have a tendency to be "bad" going for comfort foods to try and make myself feel better. "They made me feel good when I used to eat them so why wouldn't they work now" logic isn't exactly my forte when I am slipping but oh well. Bottom line I love food and more often than not my "too much to do" involves cooking in some way.

I actually eat very normal and healthy while manic. I kind of feel more excited about food, I feel more inspired to make different kinds of food, and higher value what food contributes with. And, as you mentioned, I don't have a need to eat all the time because I have so many other things to do.

When depressed, I either binge or don't eat at all because food doesn't have any 'value' to me.

I have very little appetite when at either extreme.....just not interested in food at all. In hypomania, I tend to diet, but in mild depression I go for carbs, particularly junk and comfort foods. But at no time am I interested in cooking---it's not my thing . :-)
