Basically what the title says. Just curious.
I have schizoaffective disorder, but I strongly believe that the bipolar part of that is bipolar 2. I have been misdiagnosed with bipolar 1 in the past because of the psychosis, but I've never been hospitalized for mania or had a full-on manic episode...

Is bipolar affective disorder different than just bipolar 1 or 2?

It's just the medical term for BP.

I was diagnosed BP1 in 1988 or there about. But I have only had one full blown manic episode and that was it. At best I suffer mostly with depression and perhaps hypomania, but there is psychosis too. So I voted other or don't know. I could be schizoaffective, but honestly I don't know. Psychosis can occur any time for me regardless of mood.

Cyclothymia turned into bipolar 2, so the answer is bipolar 2.

BP2 but I am not happy with the diagnosis. My psych spends about 20 minutes with me and has met me twice. He likes me to phone in to change my scripts. I believe I have bi-polar disorder, but I think there is more to it and the meds are not working to their full potential yet. He's 2 hours away, if I want to see someone different, the closest person is about 3.5 hours away. Debating making the trip. I strongly believe I have SAD. Maybe borderline personality disorder. I have no idea.

I'm "bipolar without psychosis," so I guess that's bipolar 2?

Bipolar II here. Mostly depressed with very few hypomania episoded. The last one being over a year ago. They can't seem to get my depression to level out. So I'm mostly sad all the time.

Not sure, I know you can be fully manic without being psychotic, and if you have bipolar 2, it's a given that there's no psychosis. Have you ever been completely manic or just hypomanic?

There can be psychosis w/ bipolar 2, but only during depression. I wound up with a BP 1 dx when I had psychosis during a manic episode. Not sure why it's diagnosed that way, because I don't think my mania rises to the level of say, someone who completely loses it and walks down the street naked in the snow. But I also know there's a big difference in intensity between what I know as hypomania and full-blown mania, so I guess it's the right diagnosis. I trust my pdoc and he is VERY cautious about diagnosing and prescribing for bipolar, so when he says I'm manic, it's time for someone to come get me down off the moon.

when ever there is major depression, regardless of illness or disorder, even a perfectly sane "normal" person can become psychotic when depressed. There is that chance, but very rare.

I guess just bipolar affective disorder, until the label is more defined. Whatever they end up calling it, its BP all the same x

BP II but I'm going to talk to my PsychDoc about IED (Intermittent Explosive Disorder) on Monday. I honestly am BPII. I have made some SERIOUSLY stupid decisions when hypomanic. I once bought a truck without and engine or Transmission and a totally rotten cab.... And then sunk $10k into it.

I am not absolutely sure but I think that Intermittent Explosive Disorder is only for minors.

I'm Bipolar II, ultra-rapid cycling. I had psychotic features with depressive episodes in 2011 and then catatonic features with a depressive episode last month. I doubted the dx for a long time, thinking I only had depression, but it has worsened as I got older and the cycling has become more obvious.
My hypomanic episodes still aren't really a problem, but I understand that the BP dx is still important because I need different medication than someone with major depression. Anti-depressants could make me have a full-blown manic episode, and those don't look fun. |
